My mother
used to buy these as juice
at the organic store, before that
was a thing; now I made
ink from them.
Have you ever tasted sea berries? These orange orbs growing in harsh, dry environments, like the Dutch dunes, AKA sea buckthorn berries? They have a very distinctive taste, and apparently have a high dose of viramin C. I remember my mother going to the organic store avant-la-lettre, where she bought sea berry juice and homeopathic medicine. Since then the taste intrigued me, and I really love the aesthetics of the orange berries on thorny bushes with pale green leaves standing in the sandy dunes agains a pale blue summer sky.
So, I had to make ink of them. Or ice cream. But as my ice cream machine is not where I am now, it was ink. A first attempt at making ink myself by extracting pigments from natural sources. It worked almost. Or half. The colour is really nice, but the viscosity of the ink is such that I cannot write with it. Much to learn. But also, a good challenge to find ways for using the small batch of ink I made.
Have you ever tasted sea berries?

This week I collected some sea buckthorn berries to make my own ink. This is one of the recipes I used as inspiration. Although I did add some Arabic gom and water. My attempt was only half successful. Better luck next time.
