Introducing the artists, showcasing their work, and interviewing them on the thought process behind their art, their experience as a creator, and their journey into this new and exciting space. This is the first in many series to come.

Michael is a freelance artist specializing in digital media, hailing from Manila, Philippines. The main inspiration for his works candidly derive from the result of a diagnosis of social anxiety disorder. Through his paintings, Michael can express the way he feels, directly combatting his struggle to communicate.
Art became a passion of his when he first grasped a pen and proceeded to draw on a blank piece of paper. Taking influence from the Filipino national hero that is Dr Jose Rizal. Reason being, he made a deep connection to and admired the way his paintings altered the course of Philippine history. He admired the devotion to both his work and country. Ever since then, Michael has been hoping to get to that point as he continues to produce amazingly vivid and surreal pieces of art.
Michael decided to go all in on pursuing this profession, feeling that being an artist is something one is born to do, rather than learn. He focused his study by examining the works of masters such as Pablo Picasso and other classical artists. At that point, he decided to pursue a profession in this area.
We caught up with Michael to discuss his creative process, influences, thoughts on the NFT space and more!
I am an artist without any formal knowledge, everything I have right now is the result of trial and error, a massive amount of failures before I reached this point. It started when I was diagnosed with socializing disorder, and art became my comrade. If there are ideas flowing to my head, I let it pour to a canvas.

I’m from Philippines and NFTs are popular in our country, especially when it comes to gaming, but for art, there are only a few people I know who decided to mint their artworks and sell them as NFTs. I’m trying to convince some artists to try, especially the Uptick Marketplace.
I don’t have many materials. I usually use my mobile to draw, especially the sketches, outlines and the whole plan itself. After that, I go to a computer shop where I can rent a PC for a while so I can color and finish the artwork. My artwork lies between realism and abstraction whereas some people may find it ‘weird’.

For techniques, I don’t have that specifically but before I create, I am walking in different places, observing the different scenarios and what is the ‘reality’. I may not be the one experiencing, but I really love to learn about them and that is my technique to come up with an art that represents me and my surroundings.
I heard about NFTs on Twitter. A game which uses NFTs was popular and it was trending that time. I tried to research about it and I learned that NFTs are not limited for gaming but also you may use your passion for art to create an NFT.
I guess what inspires me to create is my burning eagerness to create. Ideas are flowing to my head and it ignites my need to create, a way to let my ideas flow to prevent any mental problem.

I chose Uptick because of its great potential. It offers an easy-to-use platform with a wide variety of tokens to choose from such as IRIS, BNB, ETH and POLYGON. Users can create, buy, and sell NFTs without any coding skills, and it supports various NFTs such as art, collectibles, photography and many more which can be utilized not only by an artist but also for some businesses. A great potential indeed.
This is my favorite artwork as of now, but that doesn’t mean I don’t love them all!

The vital part when I am creating is the ideas. I can only create if there is something which can turn on my switch, and by traveling around, I can get the ideas that I want. I take pictures and notes to ensure there will be sufficient puzzle pieces to form a masterpiece. Ideas are now there, time to organize them by sketching through my mobile and my old stylus. Usually it takes 2–4 hours since I have no formal knowledge, instead of depending on fundamentals, I tend to depend on trial and error until I come up with a desired outline. The hardest part is putting life to it. I am renting a PC in a computer shop to use for putting all the ideas and incorporating it with colors and hues to reach a final result, a piece which represents us.

I discovered it through Twitter when there was hype about NFT games. For me, the NFT space is a great place for artists where their artworks can be much more appreciated. There is a stereotype here in the Philippines that an artist won’t be successful since there are no opportunities for them at all, but the NFT spaces broke that and here I am, creating what I love and earning at the same time. A great opportunity for artists to spread their wings.

What I love? I love the moon. It’s pretty. Very pretty. In all its phases. Just like us, we are beautiful creatures whatever happens and whatever the struggles we are facing right now.
