The outbreak of the pandemic shook all traditional beliefs about how relevant science is in times of crisis and exposed the need to step up and rally around scientific efforts. Under these circumstances, and in a hurry to achieve the required standards for mass immunization, certain innovation-based medical labs found it was the right time for a bolder approach. An independent lab working on monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) was ready to take this course of action: MABLOC.
MABLOC aims to revolutionize the treatment and cure of infectious diseases, including yellow fever, dengue, Zika, COVID-19, and viruses from the betacoronavirus family. MABLOC sought for alternatives to finance its scientific research and partnered with Sthorm, a Web3 mission-driven unit working towards a new economic, social, and environmental paradigm. This partnership has already collected around 10M USD for its joint venture.
Sthorm's close relationship to alternative funding for medicine, science, and health wasn't a novelty. In fact, by 2020 ViralCure was already a seed project and preceded #HCCOMVIDA.
In the early stages of the pandemic, #HCCOMVIDA was launched in support of Hospital Das Clínicas in São Paulo, the largest medical-hospital complex in Latin America. Over $R30 million were raised in donations, making the initiative the most significant fundraising campaign of the Coronavirus pandemic in Brazil and the largest ever for a single hospital. With 0 (zero) keep fee for the partners involved. Science should be much more than a business.
Throughout 2020, the urgency to find vaccines for SARS-CoV-2 marked the pace of an unprecedented race: treat, prevent, and save as many lives as possible. How healthcare was made available to the population brought many issues to the surface. Global inefficiencies became apparent in scientific research, publishing, and funding. To this day, the scarcity of vaccines in underdeveloped countries remains alarming.
In response to the given context, Sthorm’s collective efforts would once again seek to deploy a project that could embrace the prior experience in funding scientific research by using the full potential of distributed ledger technologies. This project became Global Pandemic Shield (GPS).
GPS’ mission was to provide a novel approach to finance healthcare research by leveling creativity with science, artistry with well-being, and imagination with purpose, leveraging the power of DLTs, more specifically, non-fungible tokens (NFTs). This is how GPS became the foundation for ViralCure as a product, where the combination of science, blockchain technology, and creative content in a social-oriented NFT Marketplace could transform the traditional status of research and development funding.
The evolution of science has shown that we must build upon the efforts of our peers to move discussions forward and bring innovation closer. The ongoing quest answers to the yearning for a more prosperous future for humanity.
Behind the curtains of these success stories was, is, and will be: ViralCure.org
From 2017 onwards, the project has been paving the way to fully launch the definitive platform for DeSci alt-funding. Leveraging on the evolution of distributed ledger technologies in copyright areas— Fractionalized NFTs, IP-NFTs, etc.— the project aims to continue to provide funding alternatives, decentralized tools, and overall knowledge of platform networking in favor of impact-first scientific research.
