My name is Bjoern and I fondly remember the 1990s, a period that differed significantly from the present day. Extroverted individuals found enjoyment in the lively streets, while introverts faced difficulties in finding platforms for meaningful interactions. Early computers such as the Amiga A500 and the Commodore C64, known for their 8-bit architecture and 64 KiB of memory, were groundbreaking innovations. However, connecting with others remained a challenge despite these advancements. The internet was still in its early stages, with limited development and high costs in areas where it was accessible. Obtaining a reliable modem capable of connecting users at speeds of 2400 bit/s or 0.0024 MBit/s was no small feat. The technological landscape of that time, characterized by its constraints and obstacles, presents a stark contrast to the seamlessly interconnected world we experience today. Overall, it was a beautiful period that, despite its numerous disadvantages, also had many advantages.

I remember vividly the moment when I first set up my initial modem, boasting an impressive speed of 0.0024 MBit/s, and connected directly to various universities worldwide. Despite being very young and not yet in school, I engaged in numerous technical discussions that filled me with joy. The internet, back then, was an open network where individuals with access to a modem, a computer, and knowledge of a programming language could earn a decent income from the comfort of their homes. It seemed like there were no complex censorship, filters, or power concentration processes on the internet at that time. Website optimization for search engines was straightforward, allowing anyone to achieve high rankings. It was an era of exploration, where intellectuals collaborated to build a decentralized internet, with everyone contributing to the project.
However, this utopian vision did not last. As the internet became a significant economic force for large corporations, everything changed rapidly. Capital poured into the internet, leading to the emergence of massive monopolies that stifled decentralized innovation with their financial might. Filter bubbles formed, focusing solely on promoting the latest products and ideologies. Innovation was overshadowed by commercial interests, and the concept of decentralization succumbed to commerce. The once-free exchange of ideas and communication vanished, replaced by a facade of participation. The algorithms of these corporate giants prioritized control and profit over genuine engagement.
In conclusion, the evolution of the internet from a decentralized platform of creativity and collaboration to a commercialized space dominated by a few powerful entities highlights the challenges of maintaining true innovation and freedom in a digital age driven by profit.

Embodying freedom from the dominance of a select few, DePIN advocates for a community founded on principles of equality and liberty. It is through these guiding principles that communities can truly flourish and drive innovation.
