Lowly People

Is it a coincidence that Jesus throughout his life taught to the lowly people? Perhaps it was because they were the most humble and willing to listen. Should that be where we resort to: Humble and willing to listen?

I think of Philosophers such as Spinoza or Skovoroda who were lowly, almost homeless. Their clear mind and their willingness to forego possessions led them to be almost enlightened. Spinoza in a more agnostic view curated 3 principles to living life.

  1. to speak in a manner comprehensible to all men, and to do for them all things that do not prevent us from attaining our ends.

  2. To enjoy such pleasures that are only necessary for attaining our health.

  3. to seek only enough money, as is necessary for the maintenance of our life and health.

Skovoroda taught to tame your desires. That life doesn’t progress or happiness hinge on material possessions. He taught of the “virtue of poverty” and the peace that it brings if we give up material possessions

Spinoza & Skovoroda died, albeit peacefully, as we all will one day.
