simmerdown is a sample fanatic, and her music has roots in the cultures that surround that, from hip hop to her visceral love for house and garage. Her music is where these fascinations intersect and awaken. There’s a sense of bliss that runs through all her tracks, of the kind where you want to go barefoot in the spring time. simmerdown is a versatile artist, however, and there’s plenty of moments and tracks that see her take a slightly different path. There’s always something in her music that will invade the slightest crack or fissure in your self as you - the listener - start to embody her music.
“I read a book called Making Beats by an author called Joseph G. Schloss and it speaks about the history of sampling culture, especially within hip hop. And so I started experimenting with samples, and for me, that completely cut the tie with me being in my head. By using audio that I hadn't recorded, but still editing it and modifying it and cutting and pasting it, I removed that critical self screaming and self criticism.”
“I haven't been part of a scene per se, but it's something this year that I'm wanting to do more, collaborating more and just sharing more moments with people in person as well as online and through Wild Awake. It's interesting to me because I've never considered the sort of role that the Internet has played with my music and whether I have been part of a scene online.”
