Joaquim Lopes (Olhão, 1798 - Paço de Arcos, 1890)
Joaquim Lopes was born in Olhão in 1798, at the age of 10 he was already working at sea, at the age of 19 he emigrated as a fisherman to Gibraltar but without success, so at the age of 21 he went to live in the town of Paço de Arcos, where he already Many people lived in the Algarve and where he worked as a rower on the Bugio falua that supplied the Bugio Fort.

His first act of heroism took place at the age of 25, in Oeiras, on July 29, 1823, when a man at the mouth of the Oeiras river wanted to cross with his son on his back. Both would have died if it weren't for the quick intervention of Joaquim Lopes, who, even fully dressed, first brought the boy ashore, and then went to get his father, who was already struggling with difficulty.
Some time later he was at the Bugio lighthouse, when an artillery cable was dragged by the sea. Joaquim Lopes asked his companions to hold on to the end of a cable, threw himself into the water and caught the man who was being thrown against the rocks. Although he was the youngest rower, he rose to the position of Patron of Falua do Bugio in 1833.
In 1856, on a stormy night, he woke up to alarm shots at Bugio and S. Julião, something was happening at sea. Joaquim Lopes, his son Quirino and some volunteers, went to sea in Falua and faced the storm. The English schooner Howard Primorose, ran aground in Bugio and was dismantled, six hours of fighting with the waves and they were unable to get closer, the Boss decided to return to Paço de Arcos and look for his fishing boat, faster in maneuvering, another six hours of fight, they reach the wreckage from where they save 5 sailors and the captain, at the end of the afternoon they arrive in Belém. Later they were awarded by the English government with the silver medal from Queen Victoria, Joaquim Lopes was decorated by our government.
Years later, the English schooner British Queen ran aground in Bugio in the middle of a tremendous storm, unable to get any closer, they saw the crew members disappear one by one, and managed to save the captain and a dog.
France awarded him the medal of "Dedication and Merit" for having saved part of the Esthefanie's crew, which had broken apart next to the Bugio.

A lifeboat was requested because the falua was heavy, the lifeboat was placed wrongly in Belém, because when it arrived at the location, the Lopes had already carried out the rescues.
In 1859 the lifeguard was placed in Paço de Arcos under the orders of the Boss.
For the rescue of the Spanish Bergantim Achiles, the Spanish government awarded the gold medal for "Humanitarian Distinction".
Some time later, they save the entire crew of the Portuguese yacht Almirante. King D. Luís recognized his value and, in 1862, placed the "Officer of Tower and Sword" necklace on his shoulders. Joaquim Lopes, moved, cried in the King's arms.
His economic question is raised in parliament and he is granted an annual pension of 240 thousand reis, finally the government will graduate him as 2nd Lieutenant of the Navy.
At 84 years old, he no longer goes to sea so much, it will be his son Quirino who will replace him as a lifeguard. He says goodbye to the rescuers, on a day when his son is in Belém with Falua, he doesn't hesitate, he orders the bell to ring, he goes on the back of one of his men and is tied to the helm of the lifeboat, to save the English lugger Lancy, upon hearing the bell Quirino returns to put his father in Falua and goes to save the lugger's crew with the lifeboat.
Death awaits him in 1890 at the age of 92, two years before the creation of the Institute for Aid to Shipwrecked People.
In Paço de Arcos, 4 steamboats gather to accompany the lifeguard with the body.
He will proceed to the Prazeres cemetery, always accompanied by El Rei D. Carlos. Later it will be transferred to the Oeiras cemetery, where a mausoleum will be erected.
In Olhão, in the Jardim Patrão Joaquim Lopes opened in 1957 (in front of the Ria Formosa), a bust of him was placed in 1976.
