Prince Caelus and the Moon

Once upon a time, there was a tiny little kingdom hidden in the valley. They have everything they need, so no one has ever left this valley except Prince Caelus. He keeps wondering about life outside of the valley. He usually goes to the highest peak of the valley and tries to gaze through the fog river that covers the mountains that surround him.

One night, when Prince Caelus was sitting on the highest peak, he noticed something in the sky. In front of that beautiful full moon, there is a gorgeous woman riding a chariot. And when they make eye contact, the prince falls in love with her right away. He wants to call and make her stop, but they are too far from each other. So they just kept looking at each other and smiling that night.

The prince discovered she was missing the next night, and the moon had vanished. There are many bright stars in the sky, but nothing like the moon. But the prince does not give up. He began constructing a staircase in order to get as close to where he saw the woman last night as possible. Day by day, night by night, the staircase is going higher and higher toward the direction of the moon, which also makes its appearance bit by bit every night.

Finally, the full moon is back, and that beautiful woman is also traveling on her chariot. Prince Caelus stands waiting on the last step in order to talk to the woman for the very first time.

"Good evening, my lady. I'm Caelus. I'm dying to see you again since that night I saw you travel across the sky." He bows and extends his hand to her.

The lady steps down from her chariot, grabs the prince's hand, and then stands next to him.

"Good evening, Prince Caelus. I've had many different names because I've traveled to many different continents. You can call me any way you like."

"Oh, I don't know about that. You should have a one-of-a-kind, lovely name."

The prince is in deep thought as she waits for his reply. The fog is also gone, and it appears that there is also a big city full of life just down below.

"Have you ever been in that city?" She points toward that lively place as she speaks.

"Never."

"Shall we go there together then?"

"Oh, that is great!"

"But I have to leave before dawn."

"Why can't you stay with me? I mean, my people are great. Our town is peaceful and quiet, but we have everything."

"I'm actually always there with you. You just have never noticed me before." She smiles as she speaks.

The prince thought that it was her joke, so he didn't pay attention. That night, they went to the city outside of the valley together. The prince is so excited to see so many interesting things. This city is vibrant, and the people here are more animated than in his hometown.

Time flies. The lady has to leave. The prince is so sad to see her go.

"When can I meet you again?"

"The next full moon will be."

"I'll be there waiting for you, my love. Oh yes. Let me call you 'Love'."

She blushes as she hears him call her that.

"How come you call me that? We just met tonight. How do you know that I am your love."

"I've known I loved you since the night I first saw you, my love."

"Hahaha. I have to go, Prince Caelus."

Love steps on her chariot, making her last gaze go to her handsome prince. He kisses her hand and looks at her beautiful, sparkling eyes.

"Until the next full moon, my lady Love."

"See you soon, my handsome prince."

And then she left before the sunrise and sent Prince Caelus back to his peaceful little town.

The next morning, Prince Caelus tells his people about the city beyond the valley and then gives the order to build a tunnel that connects with the outside world. People were initially afraid of what the world outside of the valley looked like, but they gradually got to know it. The prince also gets to know a lovely princess of that city. They become friends, building a very special bond. Days pass by until the next full moon. The prince was climbing the stairs, waiting for his Love.

"Hello again, my prince." She greeted him as soon as she arrived, took her prince's hand, and sat next to him.

"I miss you a lot, my love."

"Really? I thought I would never see you again."

"Why?"

"I saw that you made a new friend with that beautiful princess."

"Oh, are you jealous?" He laughed and looked at her.

"Should I?"

"I'm happy to know that you're jealous. But don't worry, my love; the one that I love is you. And also, I would like to spend the rest of my life with you. Can you be my queen?"

Suddenly, after he said that, she looked so sad.

"I can't do that."

"Why? Don't you love me too?"

"I love you with all my heart, my dearest prince. But we are so much different."

"Like what?"

"I'm immortal, but you are not. I have to give people light at night, so I can't be with you all the time."

"But still, I will love you with all my short life, and I can also travel across the universe with you as now my people can contact outsiders. Everything changed, but in a good way."

"And I can't stand to see you die too."

"I know. It was difficult for me when my mother died a long time ago, too. But time will heal. Isn't it more sad if we refused what our heart told us to do? Can you really give up on me? because I can't. If you leave me, I'll find you, even if it means that I have to build the stairs to reach heaven. I'll do it."

as Prince Caelus makes his stand. The woman is so overwhelmed with the love that he showed her. They make a promise to see each other again at the next full moon. She makes herself depart again at dawn.

The prince was thinking of a way to live with the Moon Princess. He goes to talk to the neighbor princess. She lends him a book that holds a tale about the fountain that will grant people immortality. However, in the story, it says that whoever drinks the water from the fountain will also forget everything in exchange for immortality. The prince is in deep thought.

He tells the story about that fountain to the Moon Princess when they meet again.

"I would rather grow old than forget about you, my love." The prince gave her his answer.

"Then, let's grow old together."

"What do you mean? Aren't you immortal?"

The Moon Princess smiles.

"Kiss me, my prince. After you give me a kiss tonight, I'll be a human just like you. I will no longer shine nor have the ability to control the times."

"But that also means you'll get sick and experience physical pain."

"That is life, right? I wish I had experienced that a thousand years ago."

The answer she gave makes him hurt. She gave up her immortality just to be with him.

"What happens to the world then?"

"There will be no light at night, and maybe the ocean will have no tides."

"It means not just you, but the whole world will die too."

"I'm afraid so."

"No. I can't let that happen. Let me find that fountain, my love."

"But that means you will forget about me. You will never know that I even exist."

"I'm sure that as soon as I meet you, I will fall in love with you again."

He noticed her fears and uncertainty as he gazed into her eyes. The prince hugs her while whispering his love for her. They then set out on a journey to find the fountain.

In a very faraway land, there is an abandoned town hidden in the forest. The fountain is there, in the heart of the forest. The sun is yet to rise as the time runs up. The prince heads toward the fountain and kneels down with two hands, scooping crystal-clear water from the fountain. The Moon Princess sits next to him and shows her worried eyes when she looks at her prince.

"Reassure my love. I'll find you. Wherever you are, I will fall in love with you again, and we will be together for eternity."

The dawn's early rays hit them. As soon as the prince sips from his palms, the world goes white. Before his consciousness returned, the Moon Princess had already vanished.

Just like in the tale, the prince forgets about the Moon Princess. He even forgot about the tunnel he ordered to let outsiders into this town. The neighbor princess from another city visits him every day and gives him back his long lost memory bit by bit, except for the part where he went out on a journey to find immortal life in order to be with the Moon Princess. The envious princess attempted to locate the fountain. She is also determined to be immortal and wants to invade Prince Caelus's hometown. She also made her people destroy that staircase that reached to the sky.

Luckily, all those years, the prince totally forgot about where that fountain was. The princess has never gotten what she wants in her lifetime. Left alone, the immortal prince rules both cities with kindness. He's too busy helping people and dealing with the war from the outside. So he has never been in love with anyone. But as he is now, he can never grow old or die. He started to feel so lonely, and there is one thing that keeps bothering his mind. He could hear someone calling his name from afar every full moon night.

When he looked up one full moon night, he saw a woman riding in a carriage across the sky. That was when the prince started to build the new staircase to reach her.

They finally make contact on the next full moon night.

"Good evening. My name is Caelus."

"Pleased to meet you, my prince." she replies, yet with a sad smile.

"You look so familar. Do I know you before?"

"If I tell you, will you believe me? It is a long story."

"I have eternity to listen to you." Prince Caelus answers with a smile.

"What is your name, my love?"

As soon as the Moon Princess heard him call her that, she cried with joy but gave her prince a surprised look.

"Why are you cry, my love? Did you hurt? Tell me."

"No. On the other hand, I'm so happy. You just call me the name you gave me long time ago."

"Oh, really? Now, I want to know all of it—about my past, about you, and about us."

The Moon Princess nodded, and then she started telling a story about the Prince, who fell in love with the Moon.
