"Barge Haulers" on the Volga by Iliá Repin, reimagined.
The work depicts eleven men pulling a barge on the Volga River using a towrope. The towmen appear to be on the verge of collapsing from exhaustion due to the effort of pulling the barge.
Repin considered it his first professional work. When he exhibited it, he was criticized for the raw expressiveness of his workers, which contrasted with the romantic, classical, or propagandistic style of most Russian art of his time, and it paved the way for him to later join the Peredvizhniki.
