San Antonio Express-News reports that a Texas congressman endorsed by Trump had an affair with an aide who set herself on fire last year and died of her injuries.
Months before her death, Regina Santos-Aviles texted a fellow staffer of U.S. Rep. Tony Gonzales saying she had an affair with the married congressman. Gonzales has dodged questions about their relationship, the Express-News reported, citing the anonymous fellow staffer, who no longer works for the congressman's office.
Gonzales faces challengers Keith Barton, Francisco Canseco, and Brandon Herrera in the Republican primary for Texas' 23rd Congressional District on March 3, 2026. The district covers a large stretch of the West Texas border with Mexico.
