good films change you
the magic that moving pictures (movies) made was reel magic ( see what i did there 😊)
i didn’t know at the time i signed up and started class that by the end of the semester all future celluloid film editing classes were canceled indefinitely
red released such a powerful camera at the time, we all wanted to be in cinematography to get to work on it
in fact i still have footage i never saw cuz the files are so goddamn big i never had a computer that could render them
that editing room tho dark and stuffy lit by dim lighting from the manual reel pullers. manual reel pullers were small devices you hovered over. you cranked film from either side to go back and forward. the film suspended in the center by the two reels applying light pressure on both ends.
the film was lit by the smallest amounts of incandescent light. just so you can see a little 24x35 millimeter square clear enough to know when to cut.
piecing together stories late at night in tandem with a couple creators is the kind of dream i wish i could live again
our building was 4 building away from an old MGM film editing building, now converted into condos
film posters made into stone mosaics decorate the walls. it’s beautiful and well hidden.
being creative in the editing room was some of the most fun i’ve had creating things
