Artifact 058 Eight soft-serves later, and Lennon was still delivering for each take. The youngest of the cast, he’s currently wrapping up his journey at Pratt and has already been cast in a handful of major commercials. I’m good friends with his parents, and one evening at dinner Lennon showed me some of his student films. I was struck by how seriously he approached each role. That same dedication carried into this project, where he plays Federico Francis, the younger brother whose main expression is in subtle gestures and body language. The ice cream scene turned out to be our most challenging: sound issues, logistics, unpredictable weather, and it happened on our final morning of shooting. But everyone rallied, especially this young talent. Artifact 057 Flamboozle wasn’t a story, a film, or a world until I first found the setting, the environment, the place that would shape everything. Before a single word of the script was written, I knew it would live in Long Lake, NY. I also knew that over half the film would happen outdoors, on and along the lake, An ambitious dance with weather, the schedule, & being able to drop into a scene at a moments notice. This moment was captured just after a rainfall. The cast and crew stood still, smiling, watching the light return, quietly awed by the beauty of this special place. Deep gratitude to my parents, and to the local residents, shop owners, and small businesses of Long Lake for welcoming us so openly. Artifact 055 As we close in on picture lock, early conversations around music, color, and overall vibe are helping shape where the edit needs to land. While in LA last week, I had the chance to connect with my talented friend @bennyabel and stop by @thepark Studio. Working with Ben as music supervisor for the film allows us to move in parallel, sharing intention and pushing the film to an entirely new plateau. I’m grateful to be surrounded by incredibly talented friends across all artistic disciplines and collaborating with them is the most rewarding when creating. Working with a cast and crew of 26 incredible humans has deepened my trust in collaboration and elevated the entire experience. 📸 w/ a @derekgtaylor cameo! 17 years ago, I met Dave at a party I was photographing. He nudged me toward the video button on my camera and I captured my first moving image of a sea turtle rising from the ocean. Artifact 052 As we approached principal shooting, I realized there was one key crew member still missing, someone I knew I needed to hire locally. I was fortunate to come across Sophie’s work. Based out of Albany, NY, she is an outstanding makeup artist. Sophie joined us for the week and immediately hit the ground running. Artifact 051 Looking back at the behind the scenes photos, there are these brief moments where I managed to steal a quick posed frame with one of the actors, a small memento that compresses gratitude into a flurry of emotion. This was our final location, on our last day of filming with Felipe Francis, played by Cory L. Cory is an actor, writer, and stand-up comic, someone I’ve watched perform both on and off screen. Some people bring a smile before they even speak, and Cory has that quality in spades. He approaches the work with care, digging into backstory, holding the embodiment of the character between takes, and when given the space delivers on a wide range of performances. I once read that showing up on time and being kind are the two most important qualities an actor can possess. Artifact 049 Eight years ago, I created a commercial shot in Long Lake, NY featuring my Pops, myself, and a beautiful blue 1937 Plymouth pickup owned by my parents’ friend, Fred. That shoot quietly became the scouting groundwork for Flamboozle, and I knew I wanted to work with Fred again and give the truck a true narrative role. Leading up to principal photography, Fred had the Plymouth ready to go, but with the rain we would be be navigating he suggested a more durable option. His classic Ford Ranger. At first I was bummed but It didn’t take long to realize the Ranger was actually a better fit for the film and its characters. A solid reminder that going with the flow and trusting the process is often the best approach in filmmaking. Early on in pre-production, I knew we needed someone local to Long Lake, someone who knew the town, had the energy, and was excited to try something new. The film needed someone who could jump into every production need without hesitation. Being the first one on set and the last to leave is not for the weary, and a production assistant’s long days require grit, enthusiasm, and heart. I’m grateful to have been introduced to Alyssa Smith a local artist and gallery owner who brought all of that and more. We even featured one of Alyssa’s linocut pieces, Flow, as a prop in the film tucked below the counter.
