and the bilingual pun that unlocked its entire meaning...
It all began with the visual power of brutalism in social housing - the weight and anonymity of concrete high-rises. I wanted to capture that stark geometry and the "pain", so the German title "Stockwerk," meaning 'floor' or 'story,' felt like a simple, literal fit.
Language has layers. The word split open: Stock (the English 'asset' or 'share') + Werk (the German 'work of art'). This dual meaning is the blueprint. The high-rise isn't just a metaphor for the art market; it's also for the personal 'Hochhaus'.
A life constrained by income. The 'Stock-Werk' becomes the hope for escape: the paradox of using a cold, abstract system to fund a warm, human dream.
We were told digitalization would be the "way out of the high-rise," a path to democratize art. But what if it just built a more exclusive penthouse? This is the core question: is this true freedom, or just a more complex cage?

ancienne tristesse keeps pulling me back.
Those two shapes in the corner - they were just people slumped in front of a screen at first, that all-too-familiar pose of checking out. But as I worked on it, they became something else. Maybe massive legs. Maybe we’re looking up at something enormous we can’t see.
The white square haunts me. Empty screen, empty space, empty feeling—all of it at once.
And the arrow hanging above everything? That’s the weight I sometimes feel, even in quiet moments. Like something is always about to fall.
The crying eye came last. Ancienne tristesse - ancient sadness. The kind without a clear reason. The kind that’s just there. Maybe inherited. Maybe just something that settles in your chest without asking.
I keep wondering what we miss when we’re not really looking.
