Founded by Curtis Sliwa in 1979, the Guardian Angels became a noticeable presence on the streets and subways of New York City in the 1980s.
They did not carry weapons and were easy to spot because of their red berets. At a time when there were fewer police officers around and drug problems were getting worse these volunteers tried to help keep people safe.
