Looking at the mediocre performance jump of gpt5 vs the older models, and then taking into account the fairly cheap price, relative to what brand new SOTA models used to cost, it seems very clear that OpenAI is keeping the really amazing powerful expensive stuff internal and just giving the public the diluted 'mini' versions (but still calling it full)
No reason to give away their edge even at a high price since others will just use it to train or build competition.
It's all up to the open source community to save us now
