We have "ghosting" and "blocking" in the modern dating world, but Victorian era "haters" were on a whole different level: Vinegar Valentines
This great archive from the Smithsonian proves our ancestors weren't as "polite" as we assumed. Back then, instead of a love letter, you sent these cards to someone you couldn't stand.
The level of "trolling" is actually incredible:
Content: Instead of romantic words, these contained savage poems and caricatures mocking the recipient's appearance, intelligence, or marital status ("Old Maid", "Dandy").
The Kicker: Here is the best part. Cards were usually sent anonymously, and back then, the RECIPIENT often paid the postage.
Popularity: They became so popular at one point that these hate cards made up half of all Valentine's Day mail.
So, your door knocks, you pay out of your own pocket to accept the mail, and inside is a poem basically saying "You're ugly."
