I’d like to think I’ve been a very honest member of Farcaster for a long time.
In some ways, it’s actually good that Dan/Merkle (who I have incredible respect for) are no longer in charge of Farcaster. Shocking, maybe, but I had long come to believe Dan was no longer the right person for Farcaster (sorry Dan, no hard feelings). He’s an incredible thinker, a great product builder, and genuinely taught me a lot about consumer by watching him build. But Farcaster was a community more than it was a network or an app, and that requires a very different type of person/people.
Now the community can step in and build Farcaster the way they’ve always believed was best. This is not a “ok, do better.” I genuinely believe open source has a really high chance of beating closed systems because of unique contributions and the speed of code with AI now.
I’ve strongly believed Farcaster should be run like a network state (GDP per capita), not a global social network. The era of mass networks is over; the internet and culture at large are splintering, and Farcaster can be one of those places with its own set of unique values. I believe very few other opportunities like this exist.
Ad Astra.
