Web3 Projects and companies are going to dramatically change how we view contributing to social good. Web3 has become an umbrella term for a paradigm shift for the internet towards one that is decentralized and based on blockchain technology. The present technology has already provided us with tools such as DeFi and NFTs that are actively changing industries, and the technology just keeps evolving. It is time for Web3 and Social-Mainstreaming to be two peas in a pod.
The innovation, culture, and principles that are baked into many blockchains and projects are precisely why they have such wide application and so much potential for this progress to be channeled towards contributing to social good. Moreover, the size of treasuries of web3 projects and Decentralized Autonomous Organizations (DAOs), due to the ability of web3 tools to effectively align economic incentives, are not anything to scoff at. Some of these treasuries are worth millions and some even billions.
ConstitutionDAO was grabbing headlines for having raised around $40 million dollars in mere weeks to purchase a copy of the United States Constitution. Although they were unsuccessful in being the highest bidder, imagine governance rights holders in these DAOs started writing social good development and initiative proposals and started allocating funds accordingly.
We already see this taking place with play-to-earn guilds focused on economically empowering members and DAOs such as KlimaDAO working to accelerate the price appreciation of carbon assets. There are also various NFT projects in their own unique ways working to amplify voices and issues.
In line with structurally implementing strategies for social good, the United Nations in 1997 first defined ‘Gender-Mainstreaming’ and later began working this concept into their organizational framework and agenda. ‘Gender-Mainstreaming’ pertains to the active mindfulness towards promoting and implementing gender equality and awareness through UN programs, projects, and activities.
I would suggest that not only does more gender equity need to exist in the blockchain space but that Web3 projects and companies should actively be ‘Social-Mainstreaming’.
‘Social-Mainstreaming’, as defined in this article, refers to the process of assessing the implications of incorporating social good on any planned action, including governance legislations and policies, products, activities, services, and programs. In other words, incorporating mindfulness towards social good and social innovation in all aspects of governance, project design and creation, community building, and so on.
A DAO solely focused on the intersection of social good and web3 tools is goodvibesDAO. This DAO is working to leverage web3 tools to create community-owned and governed projects and services that economically incentivize contributing to social good. In this case, ‘Social-Mainstreaming’ is woven into the purpose of the DAO.
One might ask what the difference between ‘Social-Mainstreaming’ and social corporate responsibility is if we are able to think of DAOs as corporations of the future. Social corporate responsibility initiatives from companies often feel forced and are not always in line with the profit-maximizing and centralised nature of these companies. However, web3 tools and decentralised governance makes collaboration more beneficial than competing and can be profitable while contributing to social good.
Ultimately, token price going up is nice, but uplifting others hits different.
