Every once in a while, an animated film comes out with no dialogue (The Red Turtle, The Triplets of Belleville), and suddenly, everyone thinks the sandwich has been reinvented. It hasn’t, but it’s fun to imagine what a new one would look like. What I think holds power for me here is the seamlessness of music and the story, and I come to find the two were created in tandem. Which one leads during the writing is where the magic is for me. And it shows on screen.
