I am exhausted right now after 9 meetings. It’s 1am now and I am finally off work. My slowly recovered work energy has been largely consumed today and I’m afraid before I even noticed I’ll burn out again.
We have a town hall meeting today.
Town halls. It’s where we gather everyone for questions for the founders. We have around 80 people in the company and part of them are geographically distributed so it’s hard for us to have meetings at the same time. Luckily Europe's timezone is in the middle so it’s not too bad, but I have coworkers in EST and Asia which means I need to get up early to meet those in Asia and stay up late for those in EST. Thank god there’s no one in PST timezone.
Anyway I joined the town hall. People ask about runway, product roadmap, metrics, macro, DAO progress and so on. Many have concerns the current bear market might drag us down to hell if no major saviour shows up. Our current runway is 12 months, and most investors think the bear will last for more than another year. Some even say the real bear hasn’t come.
Well, I just lost most of my savings from the market crash so compare to that the runway doesn’t bother me that much. I have prepared that the company will die in a year, as most of us do, but it’s still too early to start looking for a new job. Maybe in 6 months.
One of the questions caught my attention. Now we launched the product, what’s next? You need to understand when a product launches there’s always a roadmap attached to it especially when there’s a token launch. Us too. I remember the morale, it was a good time. 2021 is really the year of NFT. Yet it’s a different story in 2022. NFT now sounds like ICO in 2017 when everyone got rekt and thinks it’s a scam. The vigorous faith among the team has long gone.
So the question was more about what’s the endgame here, are there more in the roadmap? One of the founders takes about 10 mins to answer this question. He says that we shouldn’t have a roadmap, because if we put a lot of new features on the roadmap it means we will be working on those features instead of the growth, and if we have a set of features to develop we will lose the flexibility to change. He emphasises that hoping to see a roadmap is wrong.
While Vitalik and Rune Christenson both have the endgame plan for their projects, our founders on the other hand are trying to convince us a planless direction is the right thing to do, I don’t even understand if it’s him who doesn't even know where we are headed or he thought this can help the morale. It only hurts.
Of course maybe they are trying to say we should stay agile and apply the growth hack mindset to conduct experiments and find a sweet spot to grow exponentially. Yet it’s hard to swallow and it’s a meeting that’s supposed to give everyone peace of mind in this bear market.
The interesting part is no one said anything against it nor nodded to agree. I think everyone is suspicious if we misheard something.
Anyway time for bed now.
