Antonym is a brand that explores the possibilities of digital ownership within the context of tangible products.
This article marks the beginning of Antonym’s growth trajectory towards building a brand that is capable of bringing web3 technology to the forefront of culture and design. It is both an estimation of our future as well as a re-introduction of our identity and ethos.
It often feels that the more web3 gains traction as an umbrella-term for the space, the more we stratify ourselves from everything that isn’t explicitly pertinent to NFTs and blockchain technology. To the rest of the world, it can often sound as if we are on planet Mars, referring to web3 and web2 as divergent realities that we have somehow learned to travel between.
And yet the advent of web3 is not exciting because the world is now virtual in it’s entirety, but rather because now more than ever, people have a vested interest in integrating their real lives with their online identities. To erect a barrier between the two feels counterproductive if not actively detrimental to adoption.
The possibilities that exist when the limitlessness of the virtual world is interlaced with the material qualities of physical goods are endless, and yet there is a major deficit in brands that have been successful in interfacing contemporary culture and meaningful creative output with web3 technology. And we blame this on the above.
Antonym is a design house that exists at the intersection of physical creations best expressed through digital mediums.
It is both a self-deprecation of web3 and an acknowledgement of it’s significance. All of our output is an exploration of the potential of web3 technology in contemporary culture, not in a hypothetical metaverse without a meaningful present-day use case.
Our collection of bespoke designer art toys is our inaugural release - a series of on-chain digital collectibles that exist in tandem with real, physical counterparts.
As for the future, nothing is off the table, as long as it continues to explore meaningful concepts.
Our commitment to tangibles that simultaneously exist in an intangible environment is Antonym.
When Azuki introduced itself to the space, it brought with it the advent of ERC721A - an improved implementation of the IERC721 standard that enabled batch minting at a cost comparable to that of a single token. It was a gift delivered to an industry in its infancy and an immediate assurance of their ability to do more than what had already been done.
Materia is an innovation that is intended to introduce the decentralization of brand equity. It is a proposition on what the future of “web3 native” brands should look like.
Collectors that have redeemed their Antonym physical editions will be eligible to claim Materia post-redemption. The select few that own 1/1 Antonym Genesis editions will instead receive Prima Materia.
Materia, in short, is the decentralization of Antonym’s brand equity. It is a new release mechanic that allows for our core audience to access and distribute future releases in lieu of a traditional mint or pre-sale.
This is accomplished via Materia’s primary function as a decentralized distribution method for Antonym products. Throughout future releases, Materia holders will be eligible to reserve Antonym editions for personal collection or resale at production cost. This allows for those closest to our brand to access future releases and become the ones responsible for taking them to market, determining their value and deciding for themselves whether or not they prefer to use their priority access for personal collection or to act as bona fide market makers.
In short, our holders become our retailers, collectors, and distribution partners alike.
Those that own Prima Materia reap all of the aforementioned benefits, and can expect unique limited-run editions and early access in the majority of future releases.
There will only ever be 10,000 Materia in existence. Unclaimed Materia will be allocated to strategic partners and future stockists at Antonym’s discretion.
Our upcoming release expands on our exploration of phygital collectibles, applying our experience with the production of our Genesis collection to the conceptualization and design of a refined, extensive product line.
Series 01 is the first season in a collection of limited-run art toys executed in collaboration with various artists and designers and released in a blind- box format. Each series 01 blind box contains one of several limited-run Antonyms of varying rarity, as well as their respective NFT.
This is an inversion of the Antonym Genesis art toy. We believe in the potential to create products that justify the existence of NFTs, not the creation of an NFT that requires a product to justify its existence.
