Looks that dominated Digital Fashion Week NY Sept 2022
Pastel tones, chromatic materials, puffers and otherworldly scenes stole the limelight at Digital Fashion Week New York (DFWNY), which took place from 7-11 September 2022. Once again, various digital fashion talent showcased their latest creations. And I was blown away. The diversity in stories, the digital technique displayed within each garment and the versatility of skillsets coming together in the form of music and environmental production were mesmerising. There was the main showroom whi...

Javo G, the creator, and his web3 tools
Having only been a part of the digital fashion community for just under a year, I was naturally seeking a guiding hand through the hustle and bustle of the web3 ecosystem. One name kept popping up in conversations and on social media - Javier Guzmán Fidalgo aka Javo.AI-generated image by Javo GJavo humbly describes himself as a “Father, housband, brother, son”, according to his Twitter bio. But, for me, I would type a rather different description. Something along the lines of “web3 fashion pi...

For the most part, web3 is built on the idea of inclusivity, empowerment and community. And although many projects within the space have taken advantage of these values (need I mention SBF), there are those who are pushing through with integrity, creativity and commitment to realising these ideals.

Speaking with Afroja Khatun, digital fashion designer and Founder of NEOMODEST, I came to learn she was one of the talented few pioneering digital fashion as a medium for self-expression, inclusivity and cultural representation. For Afroja, digital fashion serves as a means to advocate for positive change and diversity, as well as for freedom of choice when it comes to what we wear. Here is her story.

A Law graduate from London, Afroja possesses a strong desire to revolutionise the fashion industry through more sustainable and inclusive practices, and empowering underrepresented communities. “I was born in Bangladesh and I’ve literally observed how the fast fashion industry exploits garment workers and the environment,” Afroja explains.
This first-hand experience of fast fashion motivated Afroja to pursue a cause for change within the industry. “I believe fast fashion brands will see my initiative as a positive transformation and they’ll do their part to make fashion better for all,” she says. “As a fashion disruptor, I love innovative and inclusive fashion that benefits us and the planet.”

One of Afroja’s disruptive techniques includes incorporating AI into her design process. “I saw an opportunity to combine my passion for fashion with technology to create innovative and accessible solutions for modest fashion,” she says. “I’m inspired by the potential of AI in the fashion industry and how I could use it to execute my plan for truly inclusive fashion.”

NEOMODEST, a fashion brand founded by Afroja, is grounded on the idea of informing, educating and enlightening people about modest fashion. The brand aims to do this by revealing the beauty, creativity and diverse nature of modest fashion.
“We aim to challenge stereotypes and preconceived notions, fostering a more inclusive and understanding environment for modest fashion,” Afroja explains. “NEOMODEST empowers individuals in both the digital and physical worlds of fashion by providing them with options that align with their personal styles and beliefs.”

“Through our digital collections, we help women and girls to express themselves authentically in digital spaces. In the physical world, we create sustainable and bespoke fashion pieces that blend modesty with contemporary trends, empowering individuals to embrace their identity confidently.”
Afroja recounts one particular piece that stood out to her called the Refashioned Splendour Gown which is a prime example of beautifully crafted slow fashion that is also inclusive.
“The physical gown is made from upcycled denim and the patchwork finish of the modest gown is really distinct,” she says. “The intricate patterns and unique colour combinations produced by the AI algorithm truly exemplify the fusion of art and technology, showcasing the limitless possibilities of digital fashion.”

Although NEOMODEST is still at an early stage when it comes to integrating NFTs and blockchain technology into its roadmap, Afroja realises its significance for future brand progression. “Through NFTs, we can offer digital ownership and exclusivity to customers, creating a new level of engagement and value,” she says. “Web3 and blockchain technology provide transparency and traceability, allowing us to showcase our commitment to sustainability and ethical practices.”
NFTs are not the biggest hurdle NEOMODEST has faced on its journey, however. As with many budding entrepreneurs, Afroja has found funding to be a challenge. “I didn’t have any support from anyone but it hasn’t deterred me from my plan to make fashion better,” she says. “When I shared my work with people, they actually mocked me but I’m aware of the impact of my work and glad to see that an increasing amount of fashion platforms are interested in collaborating with NEOMODEST.”
Afroa’s passion, belief and commitment drive NEMODEST forward as a contemporary inclusive brand. “I believe more existing and new modest fashion brands will be inspired by my initiative and adopt innovative solutions to reduce environmental pollution and benefit their customers.”
