Looks that dominated Digital Fashion Week NY Sept 2022
Pastel tones, chromatic materials, puffers and otherworldly scenes stole the limelight at Digital Fashion Week New York (DFWNY), which took place from 7-11 September 2022. Once again, various digital fashion talent showcased their latest creations. And I was blown away. The diversity in stories, the digital technique displayed within each garment and the versatility of skillsets coming together in the form of music and environmental production were mesmerising. There was the main showroom whi...

Javo G, the creator, and his web3 tools
Having only been a part of the digital fashion community for just under a year, I was naturally seeking a guiding hand through the hustle and bustle of the web3 ecosystem. One name kept popping up in conversations and on social media - Javier Guzmán Fidalgo aka Javo.AI-generated image by Javo GJavo humbly describes himself as a “Father, housband, brother, son”, according to his Twitter bio. But, for me, I would type a rather different description. Something along the lines of “web3 fashion pi...

Growing up, I was obsessed with mysticism, magick and fairy folklore. I used to drape myself in black robes, adorn witch’s hats and even cloaked my bright red Santa hat in black for Christmas one year (which my family were not too happy about).
That’s why, after coming across Catherine The Worst’s digital lookbook, filled with occult beauty and dark romance, I knew I had to speak with her.
Hailing from San Francisco, Catherine studied Fashion Design at the Academy of Art University and graduated with her degree last year. Bespoke couture and a deep appreciation for fashion run in the family. Catherine’s aunt owned a bridal boutique and so, Catherine was no stranger to gorgeous gowns and fine craftsmanship.
“I remember being in her studio as a kid, looking up at all the frames on the wall with beautiful brides and thinking, ‘Woah! How does she do this?!’”, Catherine says. “As I grew up, I was so used to seeing these classic silhouettes and I sort of got bored with them. Seeing Lady Gaga wear McQueen was revolutionary to me. I was amazed. I specifically remember thinking, ‘FASHION CAN BE LIKE THAT TOO? I also want to do that!’.”
Catherine’s main fashion icons include Rick Owens, Sanchez-Kane, Dilara Fındıkoğlu, Rei Kawakubo, Alexander McQueen, Martin Margiela and Ann Demeulemeester, who she sees as really pushing the boundaries of design. Her inspiration for her digital creations runs further than the realm of typical fashion, however. And for me, this is why I find Catherine incredibly bewitching in the most positive sense of the word.
“I’m mostly inspired by my magick studies; it’s an endless source of inspiration,” she says. “There’s this one magick book which I always look for inspiration (sorry, gotta gatekeep it <3). This is why Rick Owens and Dilara Findikoglu are some of my favourite designers. They also reference the occult and all its wonders.”
One of her favourite garments she has created thus far is a dress called ALTER[donna], which she crafted out of a load of virtual rosaries for a digital label called ALTERRAGE.

“It was my take on e-waste, which was inspired by how ‘some’ churches endorse burning broken rosaries, which reminded me of electronics being burned instead of recycled,” Catherine says. “In some other churches, they have a box where you can donate your broken rosaries. Before the pandemic hit, I was going to look for these and create a repurposed garment out of them. I’m glad I was able to bring this idea to life digitally!”
Hanging out in the metaverse, like Sansar, is a fun pass-time for Catherine (she’s currently trying to figure out how to transfer her wearables to the platform) and she is quick to acknowledge how welcoming the NFT and web3 communities are.
“I’ve met so many people from all walks of life,” she says. “It’s allowed me to expand my identity, as in, I used to feel like I was a fashion designer and that was my role in other people’s lives. Now, as I’m building up Digivoke, I have to wear many hats and it’s expanded my perspective and empathy for other disciplines.”
Catherine is also a fan of Discord when it comes to networking and connecting with others.“I love Discord. I’m in over 30 groups”, she says. “It’s a great tool if used wisely. It has so many features we can utilise in terms of establishing connections. Just make sure to turn off the notifications or else you won’t have peace of mind lol.”
I second that…
And according to Catherine, by the year 6211, the physical closet may in fact be completely replaced by a digital one. Let’s hope it’s sooner!
