The Atleta Network is pioneering the future of blockchain technology in the sports industry with its innovative consensus mechanisms, GRANDPA and BABE. These protocols are part of Atleta’s commitment to providing a credibly neutral and censorship-resistant environment through a Nominated Proof of Stake (NPoS) consensus mechanism.
NPoS is a democratic model for achieving consensus in distributed environments, ensuring maximal equality for validator election. It addresses the communicative overhead issue by distinguishing between candidate and active validators, regularly shuffling the validator sets, and randomizing the assignment of roles. This improves the Atleta Network’s security and promotes fair consensus.
To become a key actor in the network and participate in consensus, users must lock/bond their digital assets ($ATLA) into the protocol. This signals their commitment to upholding the network’s best interest and grants them one of two roles:
Nominators: Passive participants who elect validators and earn a portion of the rewards.
Validators: Sophisticated operators who contribute $ATLA collateral and run specialized software to gather transactions, package them into blocks, revalidate those blocks, and append them to the chain.
NPoS expresses its inclination toward maximal decentralization by splitting the block production role into Block Production and Finalization. This separation creates a system of checks and balances that keeps validators accountable and protects the system against subversion.
Block Production: Handled by the BABE protocol.
Block Finalization: Processed by the GRANDPA protocol.
BABE is a block production algorithm that plays a crucial role in the operation of the Atleta Network. BABE operates on a slot-based mechanism, which means that validators are assigned to specific slots where they can produce a block.

GRANDPA is an asynchronous consensus layer that provides finality to blocks. It allows for control over the finality structure while handling network partitions without degrading consistency. GRANDPA uses GHOST (Greedy Heaviest Observed Subtree) to navigate fork choices and ensure consolidation on a single historic state.
