Vitalik Buterin has put forth ideas to tackle Ethereum's challenges with staking centralization and block production as part of the “Scourge” phase of its roadmap. In an Oct. 20 post, he expressed concerns about the dominance of large staking pools, noting that just two entities produced 88% of Ethereum's blocks recently.
To mitigate risks, Buterin suggested capping the amount of Ether one can stake and limiting penalties to 12.5% of staked Ether. He warned that too much staking could lead to transaction censorship and other crises. His proposals include a two-tier staking model with risk-bearing and risk-free options.
Buterin also highlighted the centralization of block production, where specific builders have too much control. He proposed a “fork-choice-enforced inclusion lists” model to return transaction selection power to stakers, alongside an alternative called “BRAID,” which diversifies block production among several actors. These measures aim to enhance decentralization and security in Ethereum’s ecosystem.
