Franklin Templeton is stepping into the crypto space with plans for a new index ETF, the Franklin Crypto Index ETF. Filed on Aug. 16, the fund will track the CF Institutional Digital Asset Index, which currently includes only Bitcoin and Ethereum.
The ETF aims to mirror the index’s crypto allocations, but may add more digital assets in the future. This move marks a shift in the growing market for crypto index ETFs, following the launch of Bitcoin and Ether ETFs earlier this year.
Katalin Tischhauser from Sygnum says crypto index ETFs are an efficient way for investors to gain exposure, similar to how the S&P 500 ETF works in traditional markets. But for now, the SEC has only approved Bitcoin and Ethereum for such funds, limiting the scope.
Grayscale, the largest crypto fund issuer, also teased plans for more crypto ETFs, including both single-asset and diversified products.
The Franklin Crypto Index ETF is still awaiting SEC approval before it can trade on public exchanges.
