Das Jahr ist gerade mal etwas mehr als eine Woche alt und überschlägt sich schon jetzt mit Knallermeldungen. Da ist der Präsidentendarsteller der US of A, der, noch nicht einmal offiziell vereidigt, Allmachtsfantasien entwickelt, die kaum größenwahnsinniger sein könnten. Im besten Fall aber nur innenpolitisches „flood the zone with shit“ darstellt, um davon abzulenken, dass er und seine Gang null Ideen und Konzepte für die Zukunft haben, sondern es schlicht um Macht ging und geht.

Und dann kommt dieser Mark Zuckerberg um die Ecke und macht einen auf Musk. Faktenchecks sollen bei Meta (vor allem Facebook, dazu gehört aber auch Instagram und Threads sowie WhatsApp) abgeschafft werden. Komplett. Man verlasse sich lieber auf Anmerkungen aus der Community. Manche*r mag nun argumentieren, dass speziell Facebook ohnehin nur noch ein elendiger Haufen stinkender Scheiße ist, wo Hass, Hetze und Desinformationen ohnehin schon lange das Geschehen bestimmen. Und Werbung. Für mich begann der Abstieg Metas, besonders der von Facebook, als der einfache Like-Button Geschwister in Form der Reactions bekam. Vor allem dieses unsägliche Deppen-Emoji in Form des Gelächters. Keine Diskussion, keine Meldung, egal wie dramatisch, tragisch oder traurig, ohne dass irgendwelche komplett von jeglichem Denken und aller Empathie befreiten, gescheiterten Randexistenzen das mit Gelächter kommentieren. Am besten noch garniert mit irgendwelcher Gülle als Kommentar, für die ich mein Hirn gar nicht so sehr winden kann, um mir so etwas auszudenken. Nun kann man sicher davon ausgehen, dass vieles von Bots erledigt wird, um die Algorithmen zu beeinflussen. Kommentarspalten und die Reaktionsleiste jedenfalls sind schon lange Fledermausland und eigentlich komplett verloren für mich.

Trotzdem: Die Ankündigung von Zuckerberg hat mich erschüttert. Wenn auch nicht überrascht. Und wohin das führen wird, haben wir alle in Echtzeit bei X (ehemals Twitter) erlebt. Und können es immer noch miterleben. Kaum ein Tag vergeht, ohne dass Elon Musk neuerliche Kapriolen schießt und beweist, warum es Milliardäre nicht geben sollte. Zuckerberg schließt sich dem nun also an. Zunächst mal, so heißt es, werden die Faktenchecks, von Zuckerberg direkt als Zensur (!) betitelt, in den Vereinigsten Staaten abgeschafft. Haha, als wenn das bedeuten würde, dass das nicht auch für Europa gilt. Wer das glaubt, pudert sich den Hintern wohl auch mit dem Klammerbeutel. Wieder andere werden sagen: Was ändert sich, es ist doch jetzt schon nur noch ein Morast aus Hass, Hetze und Desinformation. Und Werbung.

Für mich und somit auch Avalost waren Zucks Ankündigungen gestern eine Zäsur. Ich werde meine Konten bei Meta löschen. Stichtag: 24. Februar 2025. Aktuell bin ich auf Bluesky ausgewichen. Auch, wenn ich damit nach den Erfahrungen mit Twitter und nun Facebook leichte Bauchschmerzen habe. Wie Wikipedia es so schön schreibt: „Kritiker wie Cory Doctorow merken an, dass Bluesky wie Big Tech weiterhin von dominanten Einzelpersonen und deren Entscheidungen geprägt wird. Da Bluesky trotz der Kompatibilität mit dem Fediverse nicht vollständig interoperabel ist, kann bei unliebsamen Community-Regeln kein einfacher Wechsel des Servers vorgenommen werden (Lock-in), wie dies bei anderen, häufig durch Vereine oder Kollektive betriebene Instanzen der Fall ist. Damit verzichte Bluesky auf wesentliche Vorteile des Fediverse zur digitalen Souveränität und zur Selbstregulierung unliebsamer Inhalte. Weitergehende Stimmen unterstellen der Plattform, eine ‚Embrace, Extend and Extinguish‘-Strategie der Vereinnahmung zu verfolgen.“ Ich wäre also nicht überrascht, ginge Bluesky irgendwann den gleichen Weg wie die zuvor genannten asozialen Netzwerke.

Avalost wird sich verändern. Der Blog ist jetzt schon an das Fediverse angekoppelt. Mastadon & Co. sind nach derzeitigem Kenntnisstand die einzige wirkliche Alternative, die nicht vom Kapital gekapert werden kann. Das heißt also, dass die Dinge, die ich einstmals auf Threads, Facebook oder Instagram geteilt habe, vielleicht weiterhin geteilt hätte, ihren Weg in diesen Blog finden werden. Damit wird dieses Ding hier noch so viel mehr Spiegelbild dessen, was mich bewegt. Die Ideen, wie ich das umsetze, werden so langsam konkreter. Erwartet hier künftig jedenfalls nicht mehr nur Comic-Reviews usw., sondern eben auch das, was sonst auf Social Media stattgefunden hätte. Der Server steht in Deutschland und ich habe mit Zucks Entscheidung und meinen Konsequenzen daraus langsam wieder das Gefühl, dass meine Inhalte wieder mir gehören. Dass damit Algorithmen nicht mehr trainiert werden, als unbedingt nötig. Und dass ich mich aus einer Abhängigkeit löse, die mir ohnehin schon länger auf den Sack ging. Als Zuck gestern diesen Paukenschlag verkündete, ging mir kurz die gute, alte (vielleicht auch verklärte) Zeit der Online-Foren durch den Kopf. Vielleicht baue ich hier so was wieder ein, damit man sich wenigstens hier ungestört über Musik, Comics und überhaupt everything Popkultur austauschen kann. Mal kieken. Diese Überlegungen sind noch nicht sehr weit fortgeschritten und vielleicht bleiben sie auch nur das: Überlegungen. Dass ich, solange der Server nicht bei mir im Keller steht und von mir selbst ans Netz angeschlossen wurde, immer in irgendwelchen Abhängigkeiten bleiben werde, ist mir bewusst. Aber mit der Entscheidung, Meta den Rücken zu kehren, fühle ich mich besser.

Diese ganze Entwicklung bei Twitter und nun absehbar bei Meta zeigt nur einmal mehr, wie sehr sich Europa in so vielen Dingen in die Abhängigkeit anderer Staaten begeben hat. Auch wenn ich anderes befürchte: vielleicht ist das jetzt endlich mal der Weckruf, den Finger aus Hintern zu ziehen und aktiv zu werden. Da wir aber scheinbar in dümmstmöglichen Realität gelandet sind, wird da wohl nicht viel passieren. Ich kehre hier bald zum Tagesgeschäft zurück, aber vorher muss ich zwingend noch ein gepfeffertes ZUCK YOU, META!! in die Welt schreien! So. Jetzt ist es wirklich besser.

Update am 5. März 2025: Inzwischen ziehe ich meine Blogbeiträge in die Blockchain um. Dezentral, unabhängig von irgendwelchen Plattformen und Betreibern (oder gar Regierungen), fälschungssicher und unverändlerlich. Und so lange keiner von den Irren in dieser Welt die Bomben fallen lässt, auch unlöschbar.

The year is barely a week old, and it's already going off the rails with bombshell news. First, there's the U.S. President-actor, who, not even officially sworn in yet, is already developing delusions of omnipotence that couldn’t be more megalomaniacal. At best, it’s just another case of "flood the zone with shit" in domestic politics—a distraction from the fact that he and his gang have zero ideas or plans for the future. It was and still is just about power. Nothing more.

And then, Mark Zuckerberg comes around the corner, trying to out-Musk Musk. Fact-checking? Gone. Meta (mainly Facebook, but also Instagram, Threads, and WhatsApp) is scrapping it. Completely. Instead, they’ll just rely on community notes. Some might argue that Facebook has long been a festering pile of garbage where hate, agitation, and disinformation have ruled the day for ages. And ads. For me, Meta’s downfall—especially Facebook’s—began when the simple Like button got siblings in the form of reactions. Especially that god-awful laughing emoji. No discussion, no post, no matter how dramatic, tragic, or sad, is safe from being met with laughter from some utterly thoughtless, empathy-devoid bottom-feeders. And often accompanied by comments so brain-meltingly stupid that I can’t even begin to imagine how one comes up with such nonsense. Sure, a lot of it is likely bots manipulating the algorithm. But comment sections and reaction bars? Those have been a lost cause for a long time.

Still, Zuckerberg’s announcement shook me. Not surprised me—just shook me. We’ve all seen, in real time, what happens when you take away moderation, thanks to X (formerly Twitter). And we’re still watching it unfold. Hardly a day goes by without Elon Musk pulling another ridiculous stunt and proving why billionaires shouldn’t exist. Now Zuckerberg is joining the club. First up, according to reports, fact-checking will be eliminated in the U.S., with Zuck himself calling it "censorship" (!). Hah, as if that won’t also apply to Europe. If you believe that, you probably also powder your ass with fairy dust. Others will say, "What’s the difference? It’s already just a swamp of hate, agitation, disinformation, and ads anyway."

For me—and, by extension, Avalost—Zuckerberg’s announcement was a turning point. I will be deleting my Meta accounts. Deadline: February 24, 2025. For now, I’ve migrated to Bluesky, though I’m not entirely at ease after my experiences with Twitter and now Facebook. As Wikipedia so nicely puts it: "Critics like Cory Doctorow note that Bluesky, like Big Tech, remains shaped by dominant individuals and their decisions. Because Bluesky, despite its compatibility with the Fediverse, is not fully interoperable, switching servers in response to undesirable community rules (lock-in) is not as easy as with other instances, often run by associations or collectives. This means Bluesky sacrifices key Fediverse advantages like digital sovereignty and self-regulation of unwanted content. Some even suspect the platform of following an ‘Embrace, Extend, and Extinguish’ strategy of co-opting the ecosystem." So, I wouldn’t be surprised if Bluesky eventually goes the same way as the other anti-social networks.

Avalost will change. The blog is already hooked into the Fediverse. Mastodon & Co. appear to be the only real alternatives not hijacked by capital. That means the things I used to post on Threads, Facebook, or Instagram—and might have continued posting—will find their way here instead. This space will become even more of a reflection of what moves me. My ideas for how to structure that are starting to take shape. So, don’t just expect comic reviews here anymore; expect everything I would have posted on social media. The server is in Germany, and with Zuckerberg’s decision and my own response, I finally feel like my content belongs to me again. That algorithms won’t be training on my data any more than necessary. And that I’m freeing myself from a dependence that has been pissing me off for a long time.

When Zuck made his announcement, I had a fleeting moment of nostalgia for the good old days (maybe rose-tinted) of online forums. Maybe I’ll add something like that here again—so people can talk about music, comics, and pop culture without interference. We’ll see. These thoughts aren’t fully developed yet, and maybe they’ll stay just that—thoughts. I know I’ll always be dependent on something unless I run my own server from my basement. But stepping away from Meta already feels like regaining some control.

The whole situation with Twitter, and now soon with Meta, just highlights how deeply Europe has let itself become dependent on other countries for so many things. Even though I have little hope, maybe—just maybe—this is finally the wake-up call to pull our collective heads out of the sand and take action. But given that we seem to be living in the dumbest possible timeline, I’m not holding my breath. I’ll be getting back to regular blog content soon, but first, I absolutely have to scream a loud and resounding ZUCK YOU, META!! into the world.

Update on March 5, 2025: I am now moving my blog posts to the blockchain. Decentralized, independent of any platforms or operators (or even governments), tamper-proof, and immutable. And as long as none of the lunatics in this world drop the bombs, also indelible.
