In a detailed thread, Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin explained that L2s no longer match their original role as full extensions of the base layer, since Ethereum's L1 has scaled on its own with fees dropping to 0.12 gwei and block gas limits eyeing 5x increases this year. L2s like MegaETH and Base handle billions of user operations monthly, boasting $34–40 billion in TVL, but many lag in decentralization with centralized sequencers and withdrawal delays. He urged L2 teams to specialize in niches like privacy, AI apps, or ultra-low latency, while pushing Ethereum to add native tools for better interoperability.
