Derby Stars is the first horse racing metaverse game to run on the Terra blockchain. Players can level-up, breed and trade horses, as well as interact in-game in various ways with other users. With a Player-owned horse NFT, Derby Stars is all about Play-to-Earn where the game economy is created directly through various user interactions.
In this passage, the author will give you a detailed NFT introduction of Derby Stars from two aspect: basic information and market analysis.
In the world of Derby Stars, horses have more than 10 different body parts, and each one falls into three tiers: normal, rare, and unique.
Also, Derby Stars horses have 5 basic stats: Speed, Stamina, Power, Grit, and Intellect, which have a very direct impact on the race.
In addition, each horse will be born with 6 skills(1 special skill, 5 common skills), and 4 talents respectively(Runaway runner, Front runner, Stalker, and Stretch runner).
Horses Parts & Rarities
In Derby Stars, there are a total 8 parts all being developed separately:
Body Parts(6): eye, muzzle, torso, mane, legs, tail
Add-on parts(2): horn, wings

Each horse in Derby Stars is a combination of 8 parts. These 8 parts are classified into one of 3 rarity tiers--Common, Rare, and Unique. Here is what each tier means:
Common parts: parts passed on to the foal(offspring) by breeding
Rare parts: non-inheritable parts that result from occasional mutations
Unique parts: non-inheritable parts obtained only from pre-sale and sale.
In Derby Stars, completely new horses can be acquired through breeding. In the process, various aesthetic traits of parent horse are passed on. As I have mentioned, rare parts of parent horse are non-inheritable, which can only result from occasional mutations with a certain low probability. For examples, if gray and brown horses are bred, sometime a blue offspring may come out as a result of mutation. In this case, gray and brown are Common, and blue is Rare. But this doesn’t mean that all blue are Rare, please remember. And more importantly, the only difference between a common horse and a rare horse lies in the appearance----generally, the rare parts are prettier than the common parts, but they make no differences in the race.
Apart from the body part and its rarity, horses are also classified into one of 3 rarity tiers--Common, Rare, and Unique. Let’s see what that means:
Common horses(unlimited): made entirely of a combination of Common parts only.

Rare horses(unlimited): made from a combination of at least one or more Rare parts

Unique horses(max 1000): Instead of being a probabilistic combination of different, the entire horse is a distinctive-attractive meticulously-designed single custom set. There will only be a total of 1000 Unique horses ever.

As aforementioned, Unique horses are the most special, and their appearance is not inherited to the foal. Therefore, it cannot be obtained by breeding, but only be obtained through sale.
Common and Rare horses are made from a combination of 8 parts, it can be obtained not only through pre-sale but also through breeding, and a Rare horse can have up to 8 Rare parts. However, the chance of getting a Rare horse in pre-sale will be higher than the chance of getting it by breeding.
Five Basic Stats
As aforementioned, horses have five stats in Derby Stars, which are Speed, Stamina, Power, Grit, and Intellect. These 5 stats have a significant and direct impact on the race as shown below:

Speed: Top velocity
Power: Acceleration, penalty reduced for running corners
Stamina: HP(amount of time that runs at maximum speed)
Grit: Deceleration, improve dirt/weather adaptability, penalty reduced when surrounded by many horses.
Intelligence: Skill activation probability and frequency of use, horse’s sight, debuff avoidance.
One stat can be increased to 100 via training, but the total of 5 stats should be less than 300.
The higher the speed stat, the higher the maximum speed the horse can run. But It is common knowledge that a high instantaneous top speed is not enough to win a race. How fast a horse can get to that speed, and how long it maintains that speed after it reaches top speed are also very important factors in racing. So, the two stats, power and stamina, are configured to play different roles.
In addition, instead of running in individual lanes like in human track and field events, horse racing is a mixed race with several competitors. Therefore, the route you want to run may be taken away by another competitor or blocked by a horse running ahead. So it’s also important to know how well you know the route you want to run and not to get excited or nervous when you’re surrounded by other horses. Derby Stars uses intellect and grit to materialize these elements.
Last but least, Derby team is trying to reflect the condition of the stadium. It can be affected in a number of ways : whether the material of the stadium floor is grass or dirt, whether the weather is good or bad, whether it is a stadium with long straight lines or a stadium with frequent curves, and whether there are many or few competitors. Therefore, high speed and stamina alone are not always advantageous. A high grit is important when running with many horses in bad weather, and power is important on a field with a lot of corners.

Skills and Talents
To further increase the fun of the game, we will implement more than 500 skills, which will be activated when each condition is satisfied. As explained earlier, each horse has 6 skills, which are further divided into 5 common skills and 1 special skills. As showing below:

Special skill is used only in the last spurt section of the match and can only be used once during the match. It shows a much stronger effect than common skill. It is indeed used to turn the game around at the last minute, but special skills are not always used once per game.
The conditions for using the skill must be satisfied first and foremost. Then, whether or not the skill is activated is determined probabilistically depending on intellect. In other words, it may not be used at all in a match, and even if it is used, it will only be used once.
A common skill, on the other hand, can be used multiple times within a match. The higher the intellect, the more times the skill can be used in a single match.
However, if the use time of a skill is set, it cannot be used if it is out of that section(All stadiums at Derby Stars are divided into 5 zones: Start, Early, Mid, Late, and Spurt.). Taking the above screenshot as an example, in the case of “Early Rush”, the time of use is defined as “at the start”, meaning it is only used at the start of a match. On the other hand, “Health Care 1” can be used repeatedly throughout the match.
Also, all skills have activation conditions and activation probability. (It does not trigger 100% just because the condition is met!) First, the trigger condition refers to the current situation of the arena. For example, conditions such as “excellent weather”, “within 5th place”, “many other horses around” refer to the situation of the stadium. Your horses can use the skill only when these conditions are met.
Therefore, in order to easily satisfy the triggering conditions, you should carefully consider the conditions of the competition you want to participate in — weather, distance, direction of rotation, characteristics of competing horses, turf or dirt, etc. — before deciding to participate or not.
If the activation conditions are satisfied, the use of the skill is determined by the activation probability. In order to increase the activation probability, the horse must have high intellect, and even a horse with low intellect can increase its intellect through training. Of course, intellect is not the only factor that affects the game, so you have to choose which stat to raise.
To explain more about the skill, the special skill is designed to have a big impact on Speed and Acceleration ability when making the last spurt regardless of type. However, to avoid being overly simplistic, the common skills are designed to have a more diverse effect than the special skills. There are 5 types of common skill according to the activation condition or effect.

Self Condition Buff
A skill that is activated only by current situation without the intervention of other horses. ex) Speed and Acceleration increases very greatly when overtaking after running more than 1000 meter.
Competitor Condition Buff
A skill that is activated when the actions or situations of other horses affect me. ex) Speed increases slightly when overtaken by other horse in the straight.
Arena Condition Buff
Skills that are triggered by stadium-related content or weather. ex) Power increases slightly on a Dirt Track. Grit increases when running close to the fence on a rainy day.
HP Recovery
All skills related to HP recovery. ex) HP cost decreases slightly on the corner during the early phase of the race.
Debuff
Any skill that lowers the stat or worsens the situation of a horse. ex) Decreases Acceleration of nearby horses when overtaken by other horse while in the middle group.
Other than the skills, the Talents of horses cannot be ignored either. In Derby Stars, Talent means running style of a horse. Just as athletes have different ways of running, so do horses

In Derby Stars, there are 4 types of Talents shown above.
Runaway Runner
A running style that aims to maintain the forefront until finish line.
Front Runner
Runs right behind Runaway Runner, aims to win by increasing the speed from the middle of the race.
Stalker
A running style that is positioned behind the Front Runner until the middle of the race, and starts accelerating from the final corner / last straight track to outpace the horse in front.
Stretch Runner
A running style that is positioned furthest to the back until the middle of the race, starts accelerating from the final corner / last straight track to outpace the horse force in front.
More specifically, These four running style are classified into five tiers: S, A, B, C, and D. The five tiers of running style indicate the actual performance of each horse when running in the certain position. In short, if the horse is a S in certain position, it will have a better performance in speed, stamina, power, etc.
Currently, Derby Star had completed its 2nd Pre-sale random mint, ready to launch its last Pre-sale random mint in Early May.

Right now, there are over 6k horses available on the marketplace OnePlanet, so besides getting whitelists for the last pre-sale, which NFT to invest remains the biggest issue for beginners. In this part, I’d like to share some of BitMetis viewpoints on this issue.
Let’s first focus on the Parts & Rarity. Rarity is the NO.1 factor that determine the price of a horse. As aforementioned, a common horse is a combination of common parts only, while a rare horse is a combination of at least one or more rare parts(8 at most). Because of the inheritability of common parts through breeding and the non-inheritability of rare parts, the limited number makes rare horses much more valuable than the common horses(On OnePlanet, the floor price of common horse is 7.77 Luna, while the floor price of rare horse is 19.5 Luna, and both the floor price are keep rising in seven days).
In short, the rarity of rare horse is guaranteed by the Derby Stars Official, which naturally make rare horse the first choice for beginners to invest because of its potential and rarity.
As for the Unique horse, which is limited to number of 1000 ever in total. Currently, none Unique horses are available on the marketplace, the only way to get it is the Unique Auction for 40 Unique horses in the last Pre-sale in Early May. If you are interested, please be prepared.

Despite that rare horses are the first choice for beginners to invest, the high price may exceed budget of many of them. So here comes the question, how to choose common horses to invest?
To choose a common horse on the marketplace, we mainly focus on two items: Basic Stats and Talent. But the truth is, generally, there is no “all rounder” horse, so common horse is still subject to how owner value it in the secondary market.
When purchasing common horses, do choose the balanced one as much as possible, which can both stand considerable chances to win the races for you and stay relatively stable in prices. Remembering to check the price history or item activity, which is the most important thing before purchasing, if the price keeps falling, you may need a second thought.
