“The Perils of Youth”
What entails a safe space?
This week, I came across a Joey Bada$$ interview in which he was highlighting the importance of safe spaces in regard to getting people to open up. On the surface, the definition of safe could have a myopic view focused on the prevention of physical harm but being “safe” is so much deeper. Check out the interview.
The majority of the time, the act of safety is more reliant on the individual who is seeking rather than the provider. Sure, safe spaces can be cultivated but don’t ever feel like you’re at 100% fault if someone doesn’t feel safe around you. One’s trauma and ability to share have the most impact on his/her/their ability to feel comfortable. There are things kids don’t dare to share with their parents but it doesn’t mean that the kids love their parents any less. A lot of the times, it is the risk of feeling weak, vulnerable, or ashamed that leads people to confide in “safe” spaces where they can avoid judgment.
That being said, you can still work to ensure you listen first when trying to create that space. Listen first without judgment if you want to create that safe space for someone to share. Don’t feel compelled however to demand that you are the space of refuge. This will avoid some pain as well when people don’t open up to you.
This week Discord announced that they are also throwing their hat into the AI game with an official ChatGPT bot named Clyde. The story posted here details the rollout plan and features for this chatbot. I’m very curious about this as someone who has been exploring the ability to integrate Discord with enterprise CRMs (shameless work plug). This will support many big brands stepping into this space as well as the smaller communities. Here are some key takeaways I’m looking forward to:
Creating conversations - Big support to community managers. Discord can be such as noisy space and tending to it all around the clock, 24/7 has become the job of several individuals across multiple time zones. We are seeing the power of ChatGPT to be able to learn and respond as prompts are fed. That will definitely be the case here as well
Sharing memes - Coupled with the point before, this will create more personable moments
Summarizing content - Again, building off the first point, this is huge to be able to get a summary as a community manager about the pulse of your server - understanding what conversations are taking place. This would be great for Brands as well as they gain insights quicker.
Providing technical support - Another task that leaves community managers stretched today. A bot that can learn what issues are being frequently raised and start to share some of that workload for addressing even the smallest of concerns will go a long way again in sorting through the noise.
As I said, this will be huge. I’m still not the biggest fan of Discord but from a tech perspective, if this is where growth continues to go, there’s bound to be some breakthroughs in adjustment between the platform and its users.
Another creator’s work I have become fond of this week, check out his Twitter here. He is definitely one of my favorite artists, who have been able to show the power of AI.

Welcome Starline! Still in the prime of her youth, the prodigy soccer player came by today to share a tragic story from her childhood that changed the course of her life. Hearing this story, we felt compelled to share. Starline has a full prosthetic body and has lived life from a place of determination and overcoming adversities. As one of the top soccer players in the world at the age of 14, she is here today to share that story and how she rose to the challenge.

“Keep Walking”
“Starline: “Growing up, I was a curious and adventurous child who loved to explore the world around me. I was always on the go, running, jumping, and climbing wherever I could.
One day, while playing in a nearby park, from what I can recall, I was climbing a tree. When I lost balance a bit, I reached for a wire which happened to be a live power line. The shock was so severe that I lost both of my arms and legs in the accident due to severe nerve damage.
After my recovery, I was fitted with prosthetic limbs. At first, I was hesitant to use them, feeling like they made me different from other kids my age. But with the encouragement of my family and friends, I began to see the possibilities of my new limbs.
It wasn't easy for me and there were many times when I wanted to give up. But I kept pushing myself, determined to make the most of my situation. With practice, I learned how to use my prosthetic arms to write, draw, and even play the piano.
I also challenged myself to be active with my prosthetic legs. That’s when I fell in love with soccer and hours of practice to get where I am today.
Despite the hardships faced, I refused to let the accident define me. Today, I continue to live life to the fullest, with a sense of joy and determination that inspired everyone around me.”
