• remember you are a communication coach, not a teacher
• most students will have a teacher, often online as part of a class. They have a structured curriculum, with defined lexical & grammar areas to cover, as well as reading, writing & problem-solving skills defined. They may be doing further self-study, including word lists etc.
• they need speech practice and maybe some semantics, that means sentence construction, by writing to you. To do that they themselves must self correct
• it might be a nice idea to get your Ukrainian partner to write a few sentences about themselves before you speak for the first time
• when you talk, try not to slow down too much, or revert to a "pidgin" English. Do choose words or expressions that work, and ask if your Ukrainian partner understands you if you want
• you are developing their speaking, listening, reading writing skills, not imparting knowledge
• please periodically recommend your partner for a certificate of progress if they have worked hard
• your Ukrainian partner also receives these guidelines to help give direction
• please request topics, questions you could ask, or any kind of help from me at any time
• at this point am recommending sessions of about 15 minutes due to electricity cuts and because it is not easy work
• if not everything is understood it does not matter: successful communication is better than accurate information
• error correction should be avoided at all times possible. Try to get your partner to correct their own errors; an important skill to develop
• will be supplying questions you can use if you like. You can also ask them to write/ask questions to you
• please get back to me if things don't seem to be going well, for whatever reason, am here to support, help and assist
• will just repeat again, many Ukrainians will have a teacher, or had one. They will need fluency practice in English, so please do not translate things
• sessions of children to children are slightly different, in that other things can be fun, even spelling..only for children to children
• good luck❕
