There has been a lot of argument around what DAOs are, and what they are not. But very little of the conversation has been around why they exist.
We hear: “DAOs need to be less centralized!” ”90% of DAOs are not automated.” ”DAOs need more structure!.”
While all of these are probably true, they are meaningless.
What are the direct benefits of arguing what is a DAO and what isn’t a DAO? Collectively we will gain nothing if everyone suddenly explains “YES! You are right, they should all be automated!”
It’s like we’re arguing what the internal mechanics of a business should look like for it to be called a business. What if we designed ALL businesses in a way that was predetermined by the “business design police?”
It’s nonsense.
The best businesses are designed in a way that allows them to create a change in the world. Most successful political campaigns are designed to create a change. Impactful non-profits are designed with a very specific change in mind. Benefit corporations are designed with….I think you get the picture.
Now that web3 has arrived, it has given us new tools to create change. DAOs by name sake are simply organizations that are figuring out the best way to use those tools
A DAO doesn’t exists to be decentralized, fully automated or organized. It exists to create a change.
Get clear on the change your DAO is seeking to make, and the next steps become much clearer.
