Web3 has a marshmallow problem | #5
Web3 has a marshmallow problem. In the 1970s Stanford conducted a well known experiment that tested the correlation of delayed gratification with long term success. In brief, a set of children were put in a room alone with a marshmallow. They were told that if they didn’t eat the marshmallow before the adult returned they would get two marshmallows. Majority of the kids stuffed themselves. However, the minority that waited for the adult to return were better able to deal with frustration and ...

Designing web3 for wonder | #1
Have you ever been curious, neigh - wondered, why the word ‘wonder’ is used so frequently in the web3 space? WonderFi Wonderland Protocol Wonderverse The Alice in Wonderland theme seems to be a strong metaphor for web3. But what does that mean? That we’re all just Alice on an uncontrollable rollercoaster ride of bunnies, mushrooms and morally ambiguous characters? I hope not. I mean, if we truly want to share the magic of web3 with the rest of the world - replying to the emotions that come wi...

Right Actions = Appropriate Context | #51
This anecdote is often overlooked, yet vital in web3 communities. The acts of observing, contributing and participating are fundamentally separate acts with different desired outcomes. If we don’t create the appropriate context for these acts to be performed, the fundamental structure we build the community and culture on will be unaligned. Unaligned foundations never stood the test of time. This unalignment happens because if we do not present a desired action to a human within a context tha...

As we build ghosts of our past tend to appear. These are not the fun Casper kind who help us along the way, and in the web3 space they are especially pernicious.
These Dementor type ghosts suck the creative energy out of use - but only if we give them permission.
It’s no secret (at least it shouldn’t be) that we all have doubts, fears and insecurities. In fact it would be very strange if there were not these feelings. Building in web3 is like sailing into the unknown with a group of strangers with a strong belief that we’ll make it to…somewhere better.
It’s a bloody scary proposition, doesn’t matter how much optimism we sprinkle onto it.
These unpleasant feelings we have when building into relative obscurity often come from our past. Times we have failed, disappointed someone special, ran into a problem we couldn’t solve adequately, or when we were in grade 1 and got scolded for doing our best but it not being good enough (thanks Mrs. Wilkinson). These feelings of shame get morphed into signals that our bodies then use to keep us safe.
But they are DELICIOUS food for web3 ghosts. And with the amount of noise, anons, and pseudonymity it just amplifies their whispers:
“What if I can’t finish in time.”
“They all think I’m irresponsible.” “This problem is impossible to solve.”
“They are laughing at me.”
”Better to stop, and return to safety.”
So we mope, and doubt, and sulk, and eventually we start amplifying web3 ghost messages. Not always in our words of course, but in our actions, who we decide to talk to and who we ignore.
A solution?
Ignore them. The best way to ignore them is by focusing our attention on building something that creates a meaningful change. Find others who want to create that change too, then together amplify web3 ghosts ignoring power!
Not only will this help you, but it will also help us by creating an environment where an ecosystem can thrive.
