We are excited to announce that buidlers who have participated in a buidlbox hackathon within the past year are eligible for grant funding through the Gitcoin Grants Program! If you know your buidlbox history, you know our humble beginnings first emerged as Gitcoin Hackathons. It’s an honor to join our friends in pushing open source forward!
The Gitcoin Grants Program launched in 2019 as an initiative allowing people to fund projects and causes that matter to them. Gitcoin Grants is the largest and longest running web3 grants program and has continued to grow over the years, putting more than $60 million towards public goods by way of millions of unique donations.
Gitcoin raises a pool of matching funds with the support of individuals, organizations, and public goods evangelists. Hopeful grantees may apply to one or multiple rounds, and — once reviewed and accepted — supporters vote and donate toward causes that matter to them. The matching funds raised are then distributed to grantees through Quadratic Funding, which favors the number of contributions more than the amount contributed.
This year’s program rounds are focussed on furthering support for Open Source Software (“OSS”) and its potential for impact, innovation, and advancement. Rounds include Web3 Infrastructure, Developer Tooling, dApps & Apps, and 🥁🥁🥁 Hackathon Alumni! These rounds support the broader needs of the Ethereum ecosystem — from nurturing early ideas to strengthening protocols.

Hackathons are breeding grounds for innovation, but projects conceived during hackathons often need support to realize their full potential. This round aims to bridge that gap, offering resources to help these projects mature from promising concepts into impactful OSS contributions.
As a hacks platform with tens of thousands of buidlers, we are excited to see buidlers apply to the Hackathon Alumni round! We wholeheartedly believe that buidlers today are creating the dApps, protocols, and tooling of tomorrow — take a look for yourself!

Ethical and Community Standards
Gitcoin Grants firmly stands against discrimination and hate speech.
Content that could potentially harm users or cause unintended consequences is strictly prohibited.
Any attempt to falsify contributions, including engaging in Sybil attacks or other manipulative practices, is banned.
Projects must accurately represent their affiliation and intentions. Misrepresentation will lead to disqualification.
We do not allow financial incentives in exchange for donations. Our knowledge base provides further details on our policy.
Projects should not utilize grants for direct promotional activities or sales.
Projects receiving significant external funding may be excluded to ensure a fair distribution of resources.
Adherence to all applicable laws and regulations is mandatory for participation.
Open-Source Principles and Project Activity
Projects must be fully open source, offering “source available” for anyone to fork, modify, and redistribute.
All project repositories must utilize permissive licenses. Projects with non-permissive licenses undergo a manual review to ensure they still meet our open-source standards.
Projects are expected to demonstrate established and ongoing development activity, indicated by meeting at least three of the following criteria: a first commit more than 90 days prior, a recent commit within the last 30 days, activity on more than 20 days in the last 90 days, and contributions from more than one individual. (Projects that only meet two of these criteria will receive a manual review, whereas those failing to meet at least two criteria are deemed ineligible.)
Note: Projects meeting only 2 of these criteria will undergo manual review; those not meeting at least two are ineligible. This ensures projects are established and actively contributing to the OSS ecosystem.
