Hello there, Happy Sunday!
This week, I've been thinking a lot about a concept that is essential for every creative: letting go of expectations when we sit down to work. It's tempting to get caught up in the expectation that each session would result in a groundbreaking hit or a massive banger. However, the reality frequently differs, and that's completely okay.
Not every time you sit down, you'll write a hit song or come up with an amazing idea. In reality, most sessions will likely generate nothing outstanding, which is an important part of the creative process. It's critical to recognize that both good and bad ideas need to flow. This awareness is what will prevent you from sliding into the dreaded creativity block.
Many artists encounter these obstacles because each session begins with unrealistic expectations. When the results do not meet these expectations, it can lead to frustration, anxiety, and even doubting one's own worth as an artist. This is exacerbated by playing the game of comparison—looking at other people's work and wondering why we aren't creating at the same level.

The truth is that creative work requires continual effort, regardless of the outcome. My best work often comes from days when I simply focus on the input, experimenting with melodies, rhythms, and harmonies without feeling compelled to produce a song, the output. It's about making music regularly, setting aside time each day to explore, experiment, and allow your creative juices to flow without expectations. Fall in love with the process, not the outcome.
For example, depending on my mood, I may focus on melodic components or simply create some percussion loops. Some days, the results are more technical than creative, which is okay. The point is that I'm still producing and creating, even if it's just laying down simple beats that may never make it into a finished track.
This daily habit of sitting down to work, whether it results in a loop, a full song, or just a few bars of melody, is critical. It's about letting go of the need to produce a hit and instead falling in love with the process itself. Remember that work precedes motivation, not the other way around. If you wait for motivation to start working, you could wind up waiting forever.
So, go into each session with no expectations. Focus on the process rather than the outcome. Every act of creation is valuable, whether it's making drum loops or experimenting with new chord progressions. Eventually, and when you least expect it, the outcome will start to reveal itself as your ideas start to come together to form finished songs.
