This short story was inspired by love, fever dreams, and the new Instagram heart thing (it was new at the time of writing).
It all started when I first saw the little heart any animation when you liked a Direct Message in a private conversation at that time on Instagram.
I was impressed, and tired, so I had this to say about it:
Bro I swear Zuck got a notification on his phone while we were sleeping and he was fuming scrolling through our chat history seeing we discussed his CIA plans.
Reading all our chat history like a mad man, scrolling fast, adrenaline pumping in his veins. His split tongue wiggling in fury trying to sense something.
As he went further down our exchange, his Jacobson’s organ started to give him a strange tickling sensation.
What the hell is going on here.
That Macbook screen doesn’t radiate any heat, it’s as cold as the broken heart of the enslaved child who assembled it.
He got worried, unable to quit looking at the screen, the sensation getting stronger and stronger, overwhelming.
Having read all of it, he was completely disoriented. He got on the phone with the best herpetologists right away (yes rich man power right there).
By eleven, a meeting was arranged with the world top scientists. Zuck was at peak paranoia.
“They talked about hacking brains!!! Did they go through my firewall?!”
His new daily affirmation for calm and serenity wasn’t working out for him, and his profuse sweating had nothing to do with his new Swedish sauna.
Quickly after, the experts gave their conclusion.
That warmth he senses with that good old vomeronasal receptor of his.
That’s wholesomeness.
A quick check of the definition later Zuck was sitting on his ass. His legs weren’t able to support him at this point. He was having a melt down and a revelation at the same time.
After contemplating the boulder he got polished by hand to look like a pebble in his garden’s fountain, he realised he needed to do something about it.
His almighty MacBook on his lap, he got to work.
Three hours later, the heart animation was ready. No more red heart at the bottom of the message for showing liking. No. It was time for a warmer little cascade of pinky hearts, it was time for more love in this world.
At HQ developers and designers were worried there might be a secret new team to replace them. Nobody they new worked on this… Why would the big boss himself hand it to them AND want it up and running within the hour ???
ZuckZuck was blind to the waves of panic he sent down the lines of his corporation.
Strangely at peace with himself.
He watched the sunset.
Maybe he should get two other smaller boulders and stack them on that one…
Pebble stacking is kinda nice he thought contemplating his life.
That night, he asked his wife to spoon him despite having never seen such image in the “How to human” manual.
He cried a softly on his pillow.
Maybe there is more to humanity.
Zuck had a good day.
