Listening at high volumes through headphones can unknowingly damage your hearing.
Most devices, if used with headphones at 95% of their maximum volume for just 5 minutes, can already cause hearing loss.
Take iPhone earphones for example—their maximum volume, powered by the phone, can reach around 115 to 120 decibels. At this level, just one song can cause permanent damage to your hearing.
The World Health Organization recommends keeping your headphone volume below 60% of the maximum when in a quiet environment.
So in everyday life, here are a few small tips to help protect your ears:
Keep the volume low on your headphones, speakers, and TVs.
Avoid using headphones for long periods—ideally, don’t wear them continuously for more than 60 minutes.
Stay away from noisy environments, or limit the time you spend there. If you need to work in loud places for extended periods, it’s best to wear protective earplugs or earmuffs.
When we fall into bad listening habits day after day, we often don’t realize the long-term consequences. But hearing loss is irreversible, and more and more young people are starting to suffer from it far too early.
