This post is taking part in the Nouns x Kiwi writing contest, specifically trying to answer the question of “Can Nouns be the face of crypto? What would it mean for theNounishry at large if Nouns were to become a household name?”
tl;dr Hell yeah!
I see it less as a Nouns or Nobody and more as Nouns vs. other wonderful (but culturally different) communities. Let’s look at some leading ones:
BAYC Love them, super fun, great brand. But do we really want crypNounishg synonymous with apes and aping? IMHO, crypto would do well to shake off any such degen speculator reputation and present a more wholesome, clearly positive impact to the world brand.
CryptoPunks OG, edgy, as blush chip as NFTs go — but good luck prying a Punk out of the hands of its holder (yes, it does happen, but rarely). The face of crypto needs to be more accessible.
Pudgy Penguins Fun brand doing a lot of fun integrations. I can definitely see them being the face of crypto for kids. But for adults?
PEPE/WIF/DOGE Could a memecoin be the face of crypto? Yeah, if we want people to hate crypto even more. Meme culture is awesome and powerful, but also very divisive. There’s a time and place, but please don’t let it be the face of crypto.
Which leaves us with…
NOUNS! Nouns are about public goods, about open source creation, about education, about every aspect of online and offline (esports, DAO-building, actual prescription glasses, and so much more).
While every other NFT collection is about scarcity, there is a new Noun born and auctioned off every 24 hours. Nouns are accessible and exciting to kids and adults alike.
And here’s a hot take: lately, we’ve been focused a lot on pronouns, which helped a lot of people get seen. But then it all became about divisive identities and we lost sight of the individual. It’s time to remember and empower the noun. Each of us has a unique name. A unique personality. A unique NOUN. I would love for all 8 billion of the Earth’s inhabitants to say in their language and manner:
My name is ______ and I’m Nounish AF!
