The Sundance Film Festival began humbly in 1978 as the Utah/US Film Festival, created to showcase films outside the Hollywood studio system. That sounds familiar! Its identity transformed in the early 1980s when the late actor and filmmaker Robert Redford joined the movement, helping shape the festival into a bold platform for independent voices. Renamed Sundance Film Festival in 1991, the festival soon became synonymous with discovery—launching careers and films that would redefine modern independent cinema.

Sundance has long been a proving ground for indie filmmakers pushing creative and technological boundaries, making it a natural setting for Decentralized Pictures’ presence. Founded to democratize access to funding and mentorship, Decentralized Pictures brought its community-driven approach directly to Park City—connecting with filmmakers, collaborators, and audiences who share a belief in more open and equitable filmmaking pathways.
During Sundance 2023, Decentralized Pictures hosted the Film3 On The Mountain event reinforcing its mission to support bold, emerging voices in independent cinema by awarding the prestigious Andrews/Bernard Award #1 to filmmaker Miguel Faus.

The Andrews/Bernard Award (presented by acclaimed filmmaker Steven Soderbergh) recognizes filmmakers whose work exemplifies artistic ambition, originality, and forward-thinking storytelling. Miguel Faus was selected for his distinctive voice and innovative approach to filmmaking, earning $100K in finishing funds for his project The Quiet Maid (Calladita).
For Decentralized Pictures, making this prestigious award during Sundance was more than a ceremony—it was a statement that aligns with the ethos of Sundance. It affirmed a commitment to filmmakers who are not only telling compelling stories today, but also shaping what independent film can become tomorrow.

As Sundance Film Festival heads into a new chapter with the festival's upcoming move to Boulder, Colorado we want to take this moment to reflect on our personal experiences with gratitude and sense of pride that we were there.
Sundance carries nearly five decades of legacy with it—proof that while locations may change, the power of independent film endures.
Sundance and Decentralized Pictures are in alignment, no matter the location.
Park City - thanks for the memories.
