The birds in the Dark Forest community keep singing
We look back on the past not only out of a deep-seated nostalgia for that era but also in the hope of learning from past experiences and using those lessons to perform better in the future. The official Dark Forest team maintained the project for approximately two and a half years, from 2020 to 2022 Q1. During that time, they launched a total of 8 public test rounds: versions 0.3, 0.4, 0.5, and 0.6.1 through 0.6.5. Each testing round typically lasted one to two weeks. Player numbers generally...

DFArchon is a community dedicated to the pursuit of onchain reality, composed of enthusiasts passionate about emerging technologies.
In 2021, we were captivated by Dark Forest, a fully onchain MMORTS built on zero-knowledge (ZK) technology. Inspired by its potential, we developed intricate plugin systems and a crowdsourcing platform centered around the game.
At the beginning of 2023, we published Decentralized Game —The Experiment Must Go On! , committing to advancing the development of Dark Forest as a community-driven initiative. Over two years of development, we have continuously innovated and tested game mechanics, accumulating a wealth of composable gameplay features and modules. Through active engagement with the player community, we have also refined our perspectives on onchain gaming.
In the summer of 2024, we migrated the core modules of Dark Forest to the MUD engine, naming the project Dark Forest MUD.
By the winter of 2024, we had compiled and published Onchain Reality Maximalism, a book documenting the ideological aesthetics of fully onchain games in the post-Dark Forest golden age. This work not only captured the evolution of the ecosystem but also laid the foundation for the next phase of exploration and progress within the DFArchon community.
As we move into 2025, we are committed to forging ahead.
This article serves as a record of our community’s intense discussions, outlining various proposals and exploratory directions for the future.
User-Friendly Features: Wallet management, onboarding pages, page optimization
proposal 1: Expanding the universe radius by 100 times and extending the game duration by 100 times: Page optimization, map deletion functionality, and planet adjustments.
proposal 2: Seasonal System: Each season lasts for 2 weeks.
2.1 Introduce daily tasks for players (such as treasure hunting to earn in-game silver or artifacts).
2.2 Enhance guilds with ownership mechanics and collective decision-making through voting features.
2.3 Introduce artifacts that persist across seasons.
2.4 Implement collectible functional fragments that span multiple seasons. These fragments can be assembled into specific functional card sets (leveraging ERC-6551).
proposal 3: multiverse, artifacts and silver mines from different rounds can be interoperable. Design different themed universes where players can travel between them, such as setting up a farming universe with more Foundry planets.
AI tools for information analysis and decision support in Dark Forest
proposal 1: Intelligent Operation Assistance
Provide path planning to help players optimize planet migration and resource collection efficiency.
Intelligent recommendations: Offer real-time suggestions based on player goals, such as expansion, combat, or resource accumulation.
proposal 2: Autonomous Gameplay AI
Automated execution based on strategy priorities: Allow players to preset strategies, such as “prioritize attacking nearby enemies” or “focus on economic development.”
Learning AI: Continuously improve decision-making logic by observing player operation habits and opponent behaviors.
Learning the principles of functional programming to guide the design of subsequent protocols.
Develop middleware based on the MUD engine to better support Dark Forest and other projects we aim to develop.
Transaction sending management queue
Account and delegation management module
AI agent integration module
etc..
Our interpretation of Onchain Reality: Onchain Reality Maximalism
We aim to organize and design a cosmic-themed evolution system through a protocol-based approach, using fewer rules to support more diverse and rich content, thus attracting the first batch of residents and developers for the onchain reality. The basic rules of this cosmic evolution system protocol will reference the planetary operation rules from the Dark Forest game, while we will also introduce more rules to support a grander worldview setting.
It is important to emphasize that what we want to build is not a simple simulation of the current real universe we inhabit. We hope to introduce many creative settings to construct a differentiated experience. The universe evolution system constructed based on different on-chain reality rules will have different evolutionary paths. We hope to find rule sets that are more engaging and participatory, and try to build a system with a stronger future-oriented direction.
Of course, the construction of onchain reality protocols has more diverse themes beyond the universe, and we are also internally discussing the development of applications for other themes for exploration. More important than constructing rules is finding the rules that define, guide, or constrain other rules, which we typically refer to as meta-rules. Throughout the design and exploration of different themes, we will attempt to summarize and generalize the meta-rules for constructing onchain reality, and share our thoughts with you through articles or code.
Thank you for reading this far! If you share our vision and believe that blockchain applications can break boundaries to create a broader future, we warmly invite you to join us!
This is not just a community, but a journey of transformation. Whether you are a developer, artist, community operator, player, or a friend willing to provide financial support, every contribution will be a driving force for innovation.
