As the first post of this Diary of a Luncian, I want to start by sharing my personal experience with Axie. I plan to have different types of Axie-related posts in this Diary, mostly focussing on educational content such as guides and analysis for Axie, especially in Origins. For now, let me share about what Axie means to me and what I have learnt from Axie.
First and foremost, Axie Infinity is a game that I enjoy playing, especially for the past few months in Origins. Recently, when I reflected on why I play Axie, I realised that Axie played a big part in my life for the last few months. It has been a gateway for me to learn about many new things as well as to learn more about myself. I hope that more people can benefit from playing Axie, not only for the fun aspect but also use it as an educational platform to learn about various topics such as blockchain, crypto wallet, digital ownership etc.
Before I share about what I have learnt from Axie, let me start with a bit of introduction about my experience with Axie. I started playing Axie v2 (Classic) back in early 2021, then went through the play-to-earn period and partnered with a friend who managed a number of scholars. I took a break from Axie for awhile until 2022 when Origins came along. I started streaming on Twitch and becoming a content creator with a YouTube channel late 2022. Now I am starting this blog as a new medium to share my thoughts, knowledge, and experience on Axie as well as another blog sharing more random thought on gaming and life in general.
Web3 is a very broad term but I learnt about the concept of web3 through playing blackchain games including Axie. To me, the main idea is that I can connect my wallet and interact with the game, which makes transactions a lot easier, especially on receiving token rewards from playing and receiving tokens from selling items etc.
I believe that using a crypto wallet will be very useful skill to have in the not so distant future, in a way similar to knowing how to shop with credit card nowadays. Many online transactions, not only in web3 gaming, may require crypto wallet as everything becomes more decentralised. I set up a crypto wallet and learnt about cryptocurrencies when I bought my first Axies, and from there I see the potential of cryptocurrencies in becoming a big player in the world’s financial infrastructure.
I used to play quite a bit of web2 digital card games, and only when I started playing Axie I realised that you can have digital ownership for your in-game assets in the form of NFTs. This means I can sell off (part of) my in-game collection any time, i.e. I can at least get something back when I decide to move on from the game.
To me, the “play-to-earn” aspect adds another dimension to the fun of the game, and adds an additional motivation in playing. By playing blockchain games, I can potentially earn tokens that have real monetary value, which adds to the satifaction of playing as I feel the sense of progress and achievement beyond the game itself.
Axie has been through its ups and downs with its game economy, and the biggest lesson I have learnt is to look at sustainability of the economy. Where does the money come from and go to? Does the game constantly rely on new players or can the game be sustainable with a stable player base?
While I know e-sports is a big thing, I didn’t know the ease to join online tournaments and receive payout, especially in the web3 world. There are quite a number online tournaments out there for Axies, most of them are free to join. It gave me a taste of what it is like playing a game with a competitive mindset, and earned a small amount throughout the process.
One day when I was playing Axie, I thought to myself, I am going to be sitting here playing the whole afternoon, maybe I should just stream it and see what happens. That afternoon I spent 1 hour to get setup and I just went live on Twitch. It was a fun experience and I was very lucky that someone raided me on my very first stream. Having said that, I learnt that streaming is not easy. Most of the time I have zero viewers and have no one to interact with in the chat. I just play the game and continue talking. Sometimes I reflect on why I stream and I realised that I always to try make my stream a bit more educational. I realised that streaming may not be the best platform for it and that is when I decided to making Youtube videos for my educational content.
I started making Youtube videos mostly on Axie Origins to share updates on the game, share my opinion on the updates, and sometimes analysis on the current meta of the game and highlight different strategies. I enjoyed making those videos where I shared what I have learnt about the game, but at some point it started to become a chore when I felt the need to cover every update. That is when I took another step back to think about what value I am providing with my content. This is when I had the idea of starting a blog to share more about my Axie journey and also in-depth analysis of the game as opposed to purely repackaging existing available content such as giving updates on patch notes.
It is fun to try out different media to deliver content and blog is a natural one for informational and educational content. I aim to write guides on the game to help on-board and educate gamers who would like to play Axie. I hope to provide content not only for the experienced players, but also to relatively new players who would like to learn more and improve on the game. Ultimately most of us play the game for fun, and my hope is to help gamers to get more fun from the game.
Something that I have in mind is to be more in-depth analysis on the meta given that most of the gameplay data is available on-chain. There are existing platforms such as axies.io, app.pl4y.io, and axie.tech which give a lot of information on the leaderboard, with some even having matchup comparisons. I hope to analyse the raw data on my own to provide more in-depth analysis of the overall meta, but I am sure it will be a big project and takes time. Let’s see if I will ever get there, but at least it is good to have ideas on what I want to do as a content creator.
Enjoy playing Axie! Good luck and have fun :)
