Can you imagine spending over a year and a half in complete isolation, in darkness, with no access to natural light, and no contact with the outside world?
Beatriz Flamini, a Spanish athlete, did just that, and she emerged from the cave after an incredible 500 days of solitude.
“On November 20, 2021, Flamini descended 230 feet below the surface into a cave located outside of Granada in southern Spain. She wanted to spend 500 days alone underground — not only to test the limits of her personal self-sufficiency and mental fortitude, but also to help researchers understand what happens to the human mind and body under such extreme circumstances.”
Imagine this.
When she went under, the Ukraine war hasn’t started, FTX and SBF was still golden, Queen Elizabeth was still alive, masks were still mandatory, Elon hasn’t bought Twitter and generative AI was not even a thing yet!

The cave, located in the Cantabrian Mountains of Northern Spain, was a 50-meter-deep underground system, complete with a small stream for drinking water, a make-shift bed, and a toilet.
Her only communication with the outside world was a radio.
That essentially allowed her to speak with a team of scientists monitoring her health and wellbeing from a remote location.
That’s it.
Imagine being all along with no one else to talk to.
And just a radio to communicate with the outside world.
Some of the younger generations don’t even know what a radio is!

During her 500 days alone in the cave, Beatriz not only set a new world record but also provided valuable insights into the effects of isolation on the human body and mind.
Scientists monitored her blood pressure, heart rate, sleep patterns, and other physiological markers, and they also tested her cognitive abilities and emotional state through regular interviews and assessments.
The results of the study were fascinating, with her body adapting to the extreme conditions remarkably well.
Her bone density increased, her immune system remained stable, and her mental health remained strong throughout the ordeal.

She drank 220 gallons of water, did regular exercise and read 60 books.
Great way to do self-improvement stuff when you are all alone.
The study provides valuable information for future space exploration, as well as for those who live in extreme isolation, such as submarines or research bases in Antarctica.
I forgot, there are dedicated and hardcore individuals who are committed to living at such extreme places for science and passion.
However, the study also highlights the importance of human connection and social interaction, as Beatriz experienced feelings of loneliness, anxiety, and depression during her time in the cave.
Ultimately, the human mind still requires social interaction and stimulation to maintain a healthy state.

Translation: your body might be able to survive the gruesome loneliness, but your mind may not.
The scariest thing is that after a while, you mind loses track of time and the perception of it blurs.
You basically have no concept of when is when and time doesn’t really mean much anymore since your mind cannot comprehend it.
Why would anyone willingly agree to such a feat, is beyond me.
