I first heard of CityDAO back in Jan when hackers got access to the Discord Admin accounts and phished users to the tune of about $100k.
It has come a long way since then.
What is CityDAO?
Imagine an entire city owned exclusively by a NFT holders.
Who ever owns the NFTs, owns a piece of the city.
Quite an interesting concept I must say.
Remember, this was a novel idea when it first launched.
A few months in web3 is like a lifetime.
Since then, people have tried to fractionalised everything and put it on a blockchain.
From owning pizza shops to blown-up Lamborghinis.
Its a wild world we live in.
CityDAO bought 40 acres of land in Wyoming near Kanye West’s ranch.

Why Wyoming?
What’s there?
Firstly, Wyoming is one of the first U.S cities to have a DAO law that recognises DAO governance of LLC corporations.
LLCs can own land, so this creates an awesome opportunity for land ownership to be fractionalized, put on the blockchain and democratised to a whole new group of investors previously left out.
Secondly, Wyoming is famous for Yellowstone National Park, rock formations, geysers and bisons.
Lovely eh?
I can still recall the first time I ever saw a Bison.
It was very majestic… and smells like week old laundry.
Anyone can buy and sell the NFTs on OpenSea marketplace.
Owners of the NFT can participate as decision-makers.
They can contribute new ideas, design every part of the city, vote on laws and regulations .etc.
It does seem pretty serious.

There are weekly calls, the discords are buzzing and people seem genuinely interested in owning and running a city using the power of a blockchain and NFT tech.
However to be clear, owning the NFT don’t exactly mean you own the land.
You just own the right to vote on what happens on it.
Its weird, but why can’t they fix this?
If I am buying the NFT, I definitely want direct ownership on the land itself.
It is definitely still early days for such a concept.
Building a city is no mean feat.
There is simply so much to consider and plan for.

I am not entirely convinced something as complex as a city can be run effectively by a decentralized entity on the internet.
One thing is for sure, the price of decentralization is that you sacrifice speed.
CityDAO is making decisions and trying to move, but it takes time to get consensus and align everyone in a decentralised world.
They acquired the plot of land in Wyoming in Nov 2021 and till now, there is no concrete plan on what to do with it.
Anyone who owns CityDAO NFTs or tracking it closely, do let me know how it progresses.

Would you buy an NFT to own a piece of a city?
