Joshua Browder, founder of DoNotPay, an AI-powered startup that helps you fight parking tickets, wanted to guide defendants on what to say to beat the law.
The catch was that he wanted to put a earpiece in the defendant’s ears and guide them in real-time what to say.
This is whacky, bold and definitely in the grey area of breaking the law.
Of course it got people talking, and the authorities worried.
Now he is calling it off because multiple justices and courts from different states are threatening to sue him.
What is DoNotPay?
“Founded in 2015, DoNotPay has raised $28 million, including funding from prominent venture capital firm, Andreessen Horowitz, according to analytics firm PitchBook.”
Back in 2021, it had a valuation of $210M.
It is literally a service to help you fight parking tickets.
Well, the free market dictates that it was a huge enough pain point to have a startup dedicated to solving it.
But Joshua is more of a marketer and PR specialist than anything.

He knows how to get in front of the public eye and play the marketing game well.
He once issued a challenge on Twitter (where else?):
“DoNotPay will pay any lawyer or person $1,000,000 with an upcoming case in front of the United States Supreme Court to wear AirPods and let our robot lawyer argue the case by repeating exactly what it says.”
Talk about making a scene and getting eyeballs.
This Tweet had 7.4 million views and 16,200 likes!
Ladies and Gentlemen, that is how to play the PR game.
Joshua, just got the news media, pundits, critics, bloggers and writers of the world to do his bidding, twice!
First time for creating a controversy out of nothing.
He literally kicked up a fuss and angered people when he brazenly challenged the legal system.
He essentially wanted to use AI to guide people on what to say in court, in real time.

“Here’s how it was supposed to work: The person challenging a speeding ticket would wear ****smart glasses that both record court proceedings and dictate responses into the defendant’s ear from a small speaker. The system relied on a few leading AI text generators, including ChatGPT and DaVinci.”
Insane how creative people can get with the use of AI these days eh?
The news picked it up, ran stories and gave him air time.
The second time for being threatened by the authorities from different states for his attempts to bring a earpiece into court and guide defendants on what to say.
So again, another run of publicity and free press without so much as lifting a finger or paying for the marketing.
Genius eh?
That is pure mastery and execution of a marketing and press playbook.

He knows what strings to tug at, what triggers the press and knows just how much to say to invite controversy, without actually committing any crime or breaking the law per se.
Its just a well executed marketing stunt that we should all learn from.
He thought I wouldn’t notice that.
Hehe.
Well-played.
Founders, remember this:
