Who still remembers Neopets?
Neopets was born in 1999.
23 years later, it is still there.
It is still playable and lovable as it was decades ago.
I know people who grew up with Neopets and never grew out of them till they were in their late 20s.
I remember scoring my first fire paint brush thingy, to literally change the color of my pet avatar into a magical fiery coat of flames.
It was euphoric.
23 years.
You have no idea how fast times flies and how much they have been through.
There was the early days of too many concurrent users overwhelming their servers.
There were collaborations with other brands.
They were the first to introduce novel in-game theatrics and mini-games that were never seen before.

They were the OG of introducing the daily free-to-spin lucky wheel, where you could win stuff if you come back every 24 hours to spin it.
That was the birth of stickiness and user retention, and companies started to seriously look into such concepts.
Now they even have their own merch store selling physical merch!
You use to be able to access the game only via website.
They are going mobile and have rebranded multiple times over the years to suit changing consumer demands.
Now, they are entering the metaverse too.
Neopets Meta is launching its alpha version of its metaverse and it comes with all the fanfare as expected.
The recent data breach by hackers showed that they had nearly 69M users in their database.
I am surprised by that.
Apparently lots of kids still play Neopets.

So what does this mean?
Everyone is embracing web3.
It is not too late.
It will never be too late for things as important as web3.
Neopets might be a little rustier and a little later to the game, but it might still work.
Nostalgia has its value.
It works.
Next thing you know, Monopoly, Risk, Game of Life and all the good oldies will enter the metaverse too!

People who played the game growing up, now have the means and money to pay even more for in-game items.
Better still, they have kids and can now empathize and pay more for their kids to get a better experience than they did.
Unlike other play-to-earn games in web3, Neopets has legacy and a strong fanbase to build on.
Neopets was interesting and appealing as a game 23 years ago.
People will play it for the fun, the story and the excitement of what a game is.
I am just amazed that Neopets has been around for 20+ years and is still going strong.

Have you played Neopets before?
