You know I love Tesla.
I love it more than McDonald’s twister fries only available in Singapore.
Its ridiculously fast, modern, well-thought out, highly functional, beats any traditional sedan in every possible way and it doesn’t break the bank.
In the past, when technology hasn’t kept up yet, batteries were huge, electric motors were still at its infancy and there were simply too many drawbacks of driving an electric car.
But most importantly, consumer mindset was stuck with traditional combustion engines.
Imagine how hard an undertaking Henry Ford had when he tried to persuade people to try the motor car instead of trusty horses.
But then Elon Musk came around and elevated the world’s thinking.
He made electric cars cool.
He made us all accept that EVs could not only perform or replace traditional cars, but it could be the future of transport.
He spent billions and decades to shift the hardest thing on the planet: mindset.

Now that we are all more educated and convinced, guess what?
Say hello to Lucid.
Essentially a team of ex-Tesla engineers decided to spin off and started their own EV maker.
Tesla was fighting traditionally car makers and old consumer psychology.
Now that that battle was kind of won, Lucid decided to be a Tesla-killer instead.
Sounds unfair?
Welcome to free market capitalism and competitive evolution at its best.

Lucid is a very new company but it is just sublime in every way.
The Lucid Air has more range than the flagship Tesla Model S.
It has more horsepower, at 1,111 horses compared to the 1,020 of the Tesla Model S Plaid.
No idea why its slower at the century sprint, 2.5s compared to 1.99 of Tesla.
It charges faster than the Tesla.
It is larger both in seating capacity and trunk capacity.
The entry-level Lucid Air is 20k cheaper than the Model S.
Its 670 horsepower electric engine can be put into a backpack and carried by a child.
Its basically engineered to beat every aspect of the Model S.
The Lucid Air is decadent in its interior, aiming to be the exquisite, luxury sedan of EVs.
Although I have to say the Steering Yolk of the Model S is simply more stunning.
I am pretty sure the Model S and Lucid Air both handles well on the track and the road.
Well, I do have to admit that Elon is the genius who made EV cool and pioneered so many awesome technologies that we know and love.
But in the same breath, it is also remarkably cool to see someone out there even try to challenge him directly.
Who is brave (or dumb) enough to take Elon head-on?
Lucid.

I can’t wait for more challengers, because that is what will drive healthy competition, more advancements and hopefully a better deal for end consumers like us.
Meanwhile, I will eat some popcorn and wait for the Chinese to enter the game in a meaningful manner.
