Joe Montana, the Comeback Kid, Golden Joe, Joe Cool, a legendary hall of famer in American football history.
He played 16 years in the NFL and is widely regarded as one of the greatest quarterbacks to have ever played the game.
Well, did you know he has a very successful VC fund?
“Liquid 2 Ventures LLC, today announces an $80MM raise of their third core fund, Liquid 2 Ventures Fund III, L.P. that closed in December 2021, exceeding their $75MM target.”
Boom.
Who says you can’t be great at two things?
A legend in Football and now crushing it in VC?
Ooh lala.
He invested in Gitlab, which IPO for $15B.
At that level, Liquid2’s $100,000 investment is now worth an eye-popping $63M.
“GitLab was one of Liquid 2’s first investments in 2015. The company, which provides an open-source code collaboration platform, was part of a Y Combinator accelerator program. Montana’s firm along with other investors including Ashton Kutcher and Khosla Ventures, helped the startup raise $1.5 million in seed funding, which gave it a valuation of about $12 million.”
Some pointers we can all learn from the Comeback Kid.
Diversify intelligently.
You may be one of the greatest quarterbacks in NFL history, but you still got to plan for life after football.
Joe was smart enough to venture into VC and diversify his assets into various investments and some paid of really well.
He invested in wine, stocks, horses and tech companies.
Pick your interests wisely and invest in them.
Don’t be afraid to step out of your comfort zone.
He made a grand total of $50K for his 1st year with the San Francisco 49ers.
Now, with his various tech ventures and investments, he is worth nearly $150M.
He could have stuck with what he loved, continue teaching football, gone into coaching, set up his academy or take a leap and explore something he loved.
Partner up with the best.
Joe spent all his life on the football field mastering throws and reading plays.
He didn’t have the time to read up on VC and tech startups.
So he partnered with people who knew their business and trusted their guts.
Liquid 2 Ventures has about 25 companies in their portfolio and 12–13 Unicorns.
That’s pretty impressive.

Frankly, I’m just surprised that Joe Montana has a VC fund and that it is doing sublimely.
Most pro athletes don’t have much of a career after their sports career.
Kudos to Joe for never stopping and hustling hard.
