Similar to how everyone has a favourite fast food (mine is In-and-Out), everyone have a sporting idol.
For a long time, mine was Federer.
Nadal came out of nowhere and stole the show for a bit.
Nadal was unrelentingly, disturbingly dogged.
He chased down every point and never gave up, no matter the circumstances.
But it was always Federer in the end.
With his fluid strokes, graceful demeanor and immaculate Swiss aura of perfectionism.
He will always be the tennis god for me.

“I am 41 years old; I have played more than 1,500 matches over 24 years,” Federer said in an audio clip posted on social media. “Tennis has treated me more generously than I ever would have dreamed, and now I must recognize when it is time to end my competitive career.”
I mean what else does the legend need to say?
He already secured his position as one of the all time greats in Tennis and some say the sporting world.
“Federer leaves the game with one of the greatest competitive records in its history: 103 tour singles titles, 20 Grand Slam singles titles, 310 weeks ranked №1 and a record six victories in season-ending tour finals. And, perhaps most remarkably given his long run, he never was forced to stop playing a match he had started because of an injury.”
What defines a legend?
Its not how much one talks about themselves or how much publicity they get.
I mean it helps to some extent, but rather, observe what everyone else around them.

What does sporting reporters talk about Federer?
What does the fans think of him?
What does the other competitors feel about him?
What does hall-of-famers really think about his accomplishments?
You want to know how great someone is?
See what everyone else around him really thinks of him.
I have heard how other players talked about Djokovic’s outbursts, McEnroe’s meltdown, Kyrgios’ temper and sure, Federer had a fiery temper when he was younger.
But over the years, no one had anything bad to say about Federer.
Not one affair, no epic meltdowns, no crazy outbursts, fisticuffs on or off the court and certainly no troubles with the law.
A true sporting gentlemen.
The first active tennis player in history to earn more than a $1B.
He, along with others, transformed the sport of tennis to a global passion.
Something we can all learn from, both as a sportsman and as a person of society.
You want to know how good a player Federer was?
When he retired, his long-time rival, Rafael Nadal, cried beside him at the ceremony.

One thing is inevitable in this life.
Time is short and fleeting.
As much as we dread it, Federer’s retirement is a just a signal of more to come.
Nadal, Djokovic and many others are getting on with age too.
Time will keep marching on.
We need to live the best versions of ourselves and not let anything hold us down.
Federer retired with grace, humility and greatness.
He will forever be a tennis legend in the hearts of an entire generation of kids who watched him growing up.
I am excited to see what’s next for the Swiss maestro.
