What does Joseph Schooling and Mike Posner have in common?
They both took “drugs” when they were overseas.
Mike Posner took a pill (probably MDMA) while in Ibiza, after Avicii offered it to him and lived to regret/enjoy that moment of mistake/excitement.
Joseph Schooling, the Olympic Gold medalist swim ace of Singapore took it while he was Hanoi participating in the SEA Games.
And guess what.
Only one of them has the entire penal code and full weight of the law smacked in their face.
Apparently winning an Olympic Gold Medal and beating Michael Phelps is not enough to spare you from the fury of netizens and the heavy-handed laws of Singapore.
Just pause for a moment and think about it.
An Olympic Gold medal.
The pride of a nation.
No Singaporean can ever say they have done it.
And even of they did, Schooling was the first to ever did it.
He beat Michael freaking Phelps, the most decorated Olympian in history in his pet event!
So did Schooling do anything wrong?
Cannabis is legalised in so many countries already.

Thailand just legalised it and other SEA countries are considering it.
Snoop Dogg smoked a joint the size of a Volkswagen during his performance with Eminem during the virtual VMAs.
Smoking 1 joint don’t make you an addict.
There are considerations for it being a gateway drug to more powerful and addictive drugs, but that can be managed in other ways.
“The Ministry also said that given his abuse of disruption privileges, Schooling will no longer be eligible for leave or disruption to train or compete while in NS.
This consequence means that Schooling will likely miss next year’s SEA Games in Cambodia and the Asian Games in Hangzhou.”
Boom.
We just killed another talent.
Not just any talent, but the golden boy of Singapore sports that we were lionising and parading for the world to see just a while back.
Well, we all been there.
Overseas, partying, having the time of your young adult life, the sky’s the limit and the world is your oyster.
Schooling said he smoked but reports didn’t say how many times or how much.
He is an adult, going through a lot.
Cut the man some slack and let him do what he wants.
Of course the laws of Singapore has to be respected.
But where do we draw the line between what is fair and what is right?

Since shooting to fame in 2016 with his Olympic gold, several brands including Hugo Boss, Nestle and Yakult have placed their support behind Schooling.
For the sponsors who want to distance themselves from Schooling over this, I say don’t worry too much.
I think consumers will be a lot more discerning especially with social media and current sentiments.
Questions swirling in my head:
Why did Schooling confess when the results are clearly negative?
How can authorities met out judgment or punishments when there are no clear evidence besides a confession?
Who sabotaged him and tipped off the authorities?
I understand that everyone is equal before the law, but should we give people like Schooling special considerations given what they have done for the nation?
Hey, South Korea pardoned Jay Lee, Samsung’s Vice President, from jail just to help bring the national economy back to its feet (or so they say).
Can we pardon Schooling?
Because at the rate of what we are doing (or not doing) for our athletes, I am pretty certain Singapore needs another Gold medal.
