AI is eating the world.
Investors are pouring in billions and ChatGPT is consuming everything.
AI is on the minds and lips of everyone trying to get in on it.
Meet Jon Lee.
Also known as Dennis Lee.
Also known as Lee Seng Fook.
A man of many talents, many aliases and many narratives.

I am glad the Tech in Asia’s team put in so much effort to uncover such stories.
Kudos to their tenacity and doggedness.
Once in a while, it makes our startup world in sunny Singapore a little more exciting like an episode on Miami Vice.
Singapore’s Jon Lee of Vizzio Technologies has been a shining star.
Touted as a “star player” and “the real deal” by the BBC, Lee put Singapore on the global AI map.
Vizzio, a promising startup, uses AI to create 3D versions of objects and entire cities at affordable prices.

With big names like Singtel Innov8 and Sinovation Ventures backing it, Vizzio’s rise seemed unstoppable.
Who would have known that a web of deceit is being spun by Lee himself.
Once celebrated for his supposed Ph.D. from the University of Cambridge, Lee’s world came crashing down when his credentials were revealed as fabrications.
Shockingly, this isn’t his first rodeo!
This wasn’t the first time Lee, legally known as Lee Seng Fook, faced such accusations.
Over 20 years ago, under the alias Dennis Lee at Elipva, he was exposed for faking credentials and awards, leading to his dismissal.

Despite these setbacks, Lee forged ahead in China, founding LightMagic, which later evolved into Vizzio.
His past a secret, Lee rebuilt his reputation, winning startup competitions and gaining media attention.
Hey, what can I say, marketing and theatrics do more than actual product and profits.
However, the facade began to crumble when Tech in Asia unveiled the truth about his Cambridge degree.
Lee admitted to the forged doctorate, but it opened up more questions than answers.
Investors, previously misled by Lee, were now faced with the reality of his deception.

Yet, even amidst this turmoil, some board members and investors continued to support him, believing in his technology and personal journey.
Lee’s saga is a reflection of the thin line between ambition and integrity in the tech world.
Just how far can one go for success before it backfires?
We live in 2024 where lies, deceit and fake degrees can only be hidden for so long.
In a field where innovation and credibility are paramount, how do you expect to survive if you aren’t honest and transparent?

What happened to the investors doing due diligence?
Would you attribute some blame to the investors too?
I am surprised how far a simple change of name can go.
I wonder what’s next for Lee.
Perhaps he will fade away silently and re-emerge again like Cicada during mating season once more.
After all, he did it before and was immensely successful in rebirthing and rising from the ashes like a phoenix.

Got to give him props for that, whatever the case, it is never easy to start from scratch and rebuild your career and life.
Still, that doesn’t make what he did right, and he should take responsibility for it.
